The innocence and vulnerability of children Matthew 19:14 Jesus said, "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these." Matthew 18:6 But if anyone causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to have a large millstone hung around his neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea. On the mountain M.K. Joseph The bones of the children cried out upon the mountain Thin bones, bird bones, crying like birds Up the glacier birdfooted tracks Hen's feet crows' feet, old snow old world. The blood of the children cried out upon pavements The burnt flesh of children screamed in the cities. All over the earth machines stopped Animals were dumb men stood listening And this terrible crying accused The men in gold braid who make wars The men in silk hats who make peace The men in leather jackets who make revolutions The men in frock coats who break revolutions. Then from His throne spoke the Lord Jehovah Saying: bring Me millstones A mountain of hollow stones for the necks Of those who offend these My children. And He was angry, saying: let there be ocean Unplumbed depths, bewildering fishes For each transgressor one halter and one stone. The angry waves roared Aaaahhhhh. Still the bones of the children cried out The blood cried from the cobblestones The paper bones glittering on ice The honey blood swarming with blue flies. By the ocean-sea walked the Lord Jehovah Thinking milleniums; about His feet Cherubin played ducks and drakes With the hollow stones. The sea said Hussshhhh.

He heard the feet of a million walking Unhurried, firm, from valley and plain Before them ran trembling those to be judged Flapping and fumbling Mouthing and mumbling Stooping and stumbling Over the icy stones The men with gold eyes The men with silk hands The men with leather hearts The men with no faces To be judged: to be brought to judgement Before the children's bones, on the holy mountain.
