THE GREATEST BEDUG IN THE WORLD, BEDUG PENDHOWO

The district of Purworejo has a mosque that provides the biggest bedug in the world. This Grand Mosque of Purworejo is also called the Jami 'Darul Mutaqqim Mosque is located in downtown Purworejo, precisely to the west of Purworejo square, in Kauman, Sindurjan Village, Purworejo. The history of Bedug Pendhowo is inseparable from the history of This Grand Mosque of Purworejo itself. As soon as the Diponegoro War (1825-1830) was over, the Dutch Indies Government appointed Kanjeng Raden Tumenggung Cokronegoro I to lead Tanah Bagelen (Purworejo). During his reign Kanjeng Raden Tumenggung Cokronegoro there were a lot of development, such as making irrigation channel, building, and Great Mosque of Purworejo. Making the Purworejo Great Mosque was finished in 1834 AD according to the inscription on the main door of the mosque. After the construction is complete on 1834, Regent Cokronegoro I has the idea to equip it with a bedug that must be made special so that it becomes a warning sign in the future. Regent's younger brother, Tumenggung Prawironegoro Wedana Bragolan suggested that the bedug material is made from the base (bongkot) Teak tree. Teak tree was actually taken from Pendowo Hamlet, Bragolan Village, Purwodadi District, Purworejo District. From oral stories that are hereditary, the teak trees found in Pendowo Hamlet have hundreds of years old with large size, some even have five branches. This large five-branched teak trees called Pendowo contain a strong and authoritative nature. Making Bedug known as Bedug Kyai Bagelen (Bedug Pendhawa) is estimated to be done in the 1834 AD in conjunction with the construction of the Great Mosque. It is said that the bedug in this mosque is the biggest bedug in the world. This largest bedug has a front-line size of 194 cm, a rear diameter

of 180 cm, 292 cm long with a 601 cm front circumference and a rear 564 cm. This bedug leather was originally made of bull skin, but now it has been replaced with ox skin. The reason this bedug into the biggest bedug in the world may be because not all mosques in the world especially outside Indonesia have a bedug. So it is fine if Bedug Kyai Bagelan still dubbed as the biggest bedug in the world.
