Goal Use this mantra to illuminate your intellect. Saying this mantra automatically supports dharma in the world as well as your individual swadharma, a word that refers to the law of your own being or nature. As this mantra is chanted over time, spiritual light is drawn into each chakra, starting at the base of the spine. Correspondingly, our ability to comprehend the essence of each of the realms grows. There is more to upholding dharma than just combating evil. The I Ching states that the best way to conquer evil is to make energetic progress toward the good. One of the most effective ways to make progress toward the good is to actively seek enlightment. The Gayatri Mantra appears in the Rig Veda in a form of twenty-four Sanskrit syllables. For this reason, it is widely practiced in India in this form. However, the complete form of the mantra that was given by the Sage Vishwamitra, who is the seer of the mantra, is a bit longer. The Gayatri Mantra is said to contain all powers of all mantras, and is also known as the source of all knowledge and the “Mother of the Vedas,” but its primary application is for illumination of the intellect. An illumined intellect can contain immeasurable knowledge, including a complete understanding of what we call “power.” Those who have attained the fruit of this mantra are in the company of the highest beings in the universe. The Gayatri Mantra is also a Moksha Mantra. It will bestow every attainment, including liberation, if practiced faithfully. Thomas Ashley-Farrand: Mantra Meditation
