The Civilization of the Middle Ages 1. Answer a. How did the church develop? i. No main group of people and everyone wanted to find the main leader. The rest of society was looking for a higher purpose. The earliest Christians stepped forward and took over society. They redefined life by their standards. 2. Significance a. Pope i. The leader of the Roman Catholic Church (the head of the church). b. Heresy i. Describes a practice or belief that is not orthodox. It brought the church and state together. It exposed the weaknesses of the church. c. Great Schism i. In the year 1378, the Roman Catholic Church split when the King of France decided that he did not like the Italian Pope and elected one of his own. The Great Schism lasted about 68 years, during which there were two popes claiming authority over the Catholic Church.
