The Texas Ranger is one of the most cherished symbols of the Lone Star State. While the Alamo is the undisputed symbol of Texas, the Ranger stands as an enduring symbol of the people of Texas. Living up to the myth is not an easy task for anyone. As Sheriff Bobby Grubbs, a veteran of the
Texas Rangers, explains -- the old adage "one Ranger, one riot" is only half the story. The following are the five most essential qualities of being a Texas Ranger, according to former Ranger Bobby Grubbs, now Sheriff of Brown County, Texas.

1. INTEGRITY You must be a man who can be trusted. You must have credibility. Don’t shade what you say one way or the other. It’s about integrity.
5
2. DIPLOMACY As a Sheriff, I can say I want it done this way! 6
But a Texas Ranger has to work well with other agencies. You have to lead behind the scenes. And always let the other guy think it was his idea. That local sheriff will want to take the lead. He needs to get re-elected, a Ranger does not.
3. HUMILITY Listening to all the myths about the Rangers can be dangerous to your health. Remember, you're just a man: as mortal as the next guy. That said . . . .
9
4. WALK THE WALK Being a Texas Ranger is a way of life, and you have to live it 24 hours a day. 10
You don’t embarrass the Rangers. We have a long and proud tradition. Live up to the examples that have been set.
5. TELL IT LIKE IT IS Finally, you must have the ability to tell it like it is. Forget what's politically correct. If it looks like a duck and walks like a duck -- it's a duck!
