Our Environmental Policy team is constantly lobbying and learning. We lobby at both local and global levels. In 2009, we held a lobby day in the State House. We also recently started connecting with other universities within Indiana such as IU, Earlham, DePauw, and Goshen. Three members attended the Powershift ’09 in Washington DC. There members learned about climate change, renewable energy, and how to organize activist groups. Students learned from panels and workshops. It provides information on national environmental issues, networking with other students, and experience.

Environmental Policy

Mission Statement: The Boiler Green Initiative is a multi-disciplinary, campus-wide student organization that focuses on the evaluation and continued enhancement of the sustainability of Purdue University and its surrounding communities.

ALTERNATIVE TRANSPORTATION Purdue encourages students, faculty, and staff to participate in other forms of transportation besides cars that produce harmful emissions. Some of the ways include: BoilerRide- a program for students, faculty, and staff to find people around the community to carpool with. CityBus- bus transportation around campus and Lafayette that is free to students. Bicycle paths- are surrounding the campus as well as many bicycle racks. _____________________________

GRANT WRITING As of 2009, BGI has received $105,700 front grant writing, making the grant writing team the most important. To make Purdue a greener place, grants are a necessity to aid in projects. Donations have been given by: State Farm Youth Advisory Board, Indiana Department of Environmental Management, Tipmont REMC, Purdue Office of Engagement, and Purdue FSBIT. Year 2009 2008 2007

Total amount of grant $68,700 $25,000 $12,000

Green Roof Our organization has helped to bring about Purdue’s first green roof. The project is being funded by a $68,700 grant from State Farm Insurance. We plan to work with campus organizations to monitor the effect this roof has on efficiency, plant growth, bugs, and wildlife activity due to the new vegetation. The green roof is being developed on the existing roof of Schleman Hall, which is being retrofitted to handle the additional weight, and needs this green project requires. The existing 1750 square foot rooftop

will be covered in roof vegetation and heat reflective pavers for student and community accessibility. It will contain a few recycled benches/tables for seating and signage throughout explaining how the green roof system works. This is also how the BGI will be able to study the effects the roof is having, and allow access for courses to actively study the new growing environment. ___________________________________

Storm-Water Management This group works on projects related to management of storm-water in our community. They look for different methods of handling the run-off water that results in reduction of surface pollutants allowed into local waterways. Some of the current goals for the group to complete in ’09 are to work with EPICS to install a rain garden at the Hillel Jewish Campus House. They also want to determine other possible locations for these gardens and draft a design for many more rain garden to be placed on and around our campus.

Carbon Neutrality In the spring of 2007, a group of around 20 students and 6 faculty and staff grouped together to create a document detailing Purdue's carbon emissions as well as a plan to reduce those emissions. In April of 2007, a group of these students from the class presented their findings to Executive Vice President and Treasurer Morgan Olsen and other members of the administration. Along with help from many of the campus facilities, the project has been very productive and holds great promise for the future. Their goals were to calculate Purdue's 2007-2008 carbon footprints, create an easy-to-use program to facilitate future calculations, and to display these results at Spring Fest. The group successfully completed their goals and is currently working on ways to reduce our carbon footprint across the community.

There are bins located in each residence halls, as well as a large bin behind every dining court. Also, be looking for bins in the academic buildings. There is a recycling center located on 231 south of State Road 26. Reduce and Reuse

Reduce the amount of deposable products when reusable ones are available. Watch the consumption of energy and water. You can save hundreds of dollars a year, by shutting off all the lights before you the house. Inform people of the things they can do to help the environment.
