Any views, findings, conclusions, or recommendations expressed in this program do not necessarily reflect those of ALBA, but there are some very interesting, opinionated people on the ALBA board, and if you fail to leave the workshop without considering a range of views about history of the Spanish Civil War and its relationship to U.S. history, they will be upset with us.

Commitment and Expectations

Social Studies Content Learn new knowledge and skills from experts in U.S. and world history, including: • Spanish Civil War • U.S. involvement • U.S. social history • Origins of World War II • Florida history

Who can participate? High school (grades 9-12) history and related-subject teachers with a high level of motivation, intellectual curiosity, and a strong commitment to fully participate in the summer workshop. Open to all social studies teachers in Hillsborough County interested in incorporating content about the Spanish Civil War into their curriculum.

Educators will:

Stipend Receive $500 upon completion and submission of lesson plans and sample DBQs incorporating information from the summer institute Materials Receive readings, teaching resources, and curriculum materials Credit Earn Teacher Education Credit through SDHC Secondary Education (Social Studies) Department. Networking Experience a great opportunity to meet other educators with an interest in the Spanish Civil War and Tampa history

What is the cost? Participants are responsible only for transportation to and from the seminars, And parking. There is no registration or application fee Where will the institute take place? At the University of South Florida’s Tampa campus, 4202 E. Fowler Avenue, and in Centro Asturiano in Ybor City. When will the Summer Seminar take place? June 15—June 19, 2009 (one week) Each day, 9:00am-12:00pm, 1:00pm4:00pm How do I apply? Participate in and complete a oneweek seminar



Prepare for workshop by completing assigned reading



Create lesson plans and Document Based Questions that incorporates information and skills acquired from the institute



Implement the unit plan into their curriculum



Disseminate the summer institute information with their colleagues at their home schools



Assist in evaluating the institute
