• It is a reminder for everyone that children can have cancer. • • Metro Manila cancer registry records in three hospitals, show that eight kids/one every 3 hours, die everyday. Many more cases and deaths remain unreported. 

• It is also a reminder that childhood cancer strikes randomly, unexpectedly, regularly, sparing no age group, socioeconomic status, geographic Children asethnic younggroup as aor few months, region.

barely able to talk and walk, can already have cancer. 

What Is Cancer?

All kinds of cancer, including childhood cancer, have a common disease process — cells grow out of control, develop abnormal sizes and shapes, ignore their typical boundaries inside the body, destroy their neighbor cells, and can ultimately spread (or metastasize) to other organs and tissues. As cancer cells grow, they demand more and more of the body's nutrition.

 

Cancer takes a child's strength, destroys organs and bones, and weakens the body's defenses against other illnesses.

• Normal body cells grow, divide, and die in an orderly fashion. Because cancer cells continue to grow and divide, they are different from normal cells. Instead of dying, they outlive normal cells and continue to form new abnormal cells.

Every cell in our bodies is tightly regulated with respect to growth, interaction with other cells, and even its life span.

Cancer occurs when a type of cell has lost these normal control mechanisms and grows in a way that the body can no

Etiology ? • Essentially, something goes haywire in the DNA of your cells, sometimes for no known reason, and the malignant (cancerous) cells crowd out your good cells. • • When these cells continue multiplying when the body doesn't need them, the result is a mass or growth, also called a tumor.

What are the Causes and Risk Factors for Cancer? • Tobacco According to the National Cancer Institute, smoking causes 30% of all cancer deaths in the U.S. and is responsible for 87% of cases of lung cancer. Not only does it affect the lungs, it can cause kidney, pancreatic, cervical, and stomach cancers and acute myeloid leukemia.  Quitting smoking immediately decreases your risk factor for cancer.

Environmental Factors

The environment you are in can cause cancer. Exposure to asbestos, a group of minerals found in housing and industrial building materials can cause a variety of medical problems, such as mesothelioma.

Studies have shown that people who are exposed to high amount of benzene are at risk for cancer. Benzene is a chemical found in gasoline, smoking, and pollution.

Does Grilling or Barbecuing Meat Cause Cancer? • According to Dr. Ted Gansler, director of Medical Content for the American Cancer Society, eating excessive amounts of grilled meat or chicken can increase your risk of developing cancer. This is also true for pan-fried meats at high temperatures. 

Current research tells us that the well done or charred meats pose the highest risk. The problem that cooking at very high temperatures break down the amino acid, creatine, in meats. When this

CANCER THERAPY • Chemotherapy • Surgery • Radiotherapy

The type of treatment needed depends on the type and severity of cancer and the child's age.

• The goal of treatment, of course, is to destroy the bad cells to make room for healthy, good cells. • • Treatment of childhood cancer is one of modern medicine's success stories. 

• Thirty years ago, few children with cancer lived, but now almost 75% are cured of their disease.

Childhood Cancer Survival Rates

Surveillance , Epidemiology and End Results programme of the NCI

• Survival rates have improved dramatically over the last 30 years. • Overall cure rate is 75%.

 

In developed countries, childhood cancer survival rate is as high as 75 - 95%.

 

In the Philippines, sadly, it is only 10 to 30%.

 

They die because they are poor, unable to afford the high costs of medication and treatment.

25 years ago, 1 child in 10 survived Cancer…

Today - 5 year survival in childhood cancer is 70%. 

20 years ago, testicular cancer, the leading cause of death due to cancer among young men aged 15 – 35, was almost fatal… • • Today about 90% of men who get testicular cancer get cured. 

 

• Once the patient reaches the end of treatment, it is important to remember to balance the medical and psychological issues still present with the desire to get back to normal. 

• Perhaps the most important thing to do is not to wait for our children to be in this sweep over situation. • • Children must be provided with the proper kind of foods and must be brought to the doctor for their regular check up.

Ang KANSER ay parang ANAY… ….na sumisira ng ating kabahayan. Katulad ng isang salot na pumupuksa ng katawan ng tao.

  

PUKSAIN and salot na ito! PUKSAIN and KANSER!!!

Although cancer remains among the worst fears in all nations, it is becoming increasingly clear that the big “C” is not the “death sentence” it once was.

Cancer

A message of hope: Children can survive cancer, when diagnosed early  and  given prompt, adequate 
