0 Capt. Brian Nagel, CF NEADS - chief of live exercises Pretty quiet, what drives it all, it was our son's first day of preschool, so we left about 8:30 Take him to school and get there and hear about the wtc hitting the wtc Then the fun began, the start of our thing I walked back in, went ot our exercise room, nobod was n there, grabbed my headset Pandemonium galore of course Middle scope - nobody was using it, and mj. Anderson was trying to find phone numbers Prior to this another potential hijack in the system I happened to know a few people at selfrige an toledo to make things happen I just started making all the calls Started making the calls to selfridge, who were on their way home, then phoned everyone els ein the world 1 could find We were One we were chasing landed in Cleveland, basically behind flight 93, we went chasing after that and got some airplanes airborne out of toledo, Eeryone was on peacetime satus, It was pandemonim, we were busy Phone/contacts 1 had from exercises, got a bunch of other players airborne, did everything we could, established caps, phoned tanker basis Phoning people, talkng to multiple airplanes at the same time, slowly started to gathe rpeople It was pretty bizarre, it's a 2-man operation Everybody was busy, For an hour and a half basicaly it was talking to center and the airplanes and phoniing for more people and trying to do more things Some of the interesting tidbits: When Toledo went up and chased after those guys and we got Syracuse airborne, The whole timeline is a blur to me It was strange Coming from Canada, we have different rules to perate under up there I n C F f o r 12 years Only fly the cfl 8, four operational squadrons, 2 at cold lake and 2 at bagotville, quebec Switch between normal mission and air defense Nagel is from Moose Jaw "Absolutely integrated between CF and Air Force

administrative differences, but aas far as ops and personal life it's absolute integration, eeryone can speak the same language and you're just another part of the family" one interesting tidbit: as I'm phoning fighter units, we found out ther ewere fighter units we didn't even know about in the northeast no secure line, they weren't used to talking to us, but most people were on the program right away and did what they had to do, got thigns moving and got planes airborne one unit I caleld: the guy is going, who, what are you, what the hell do you want? I told the guy to go watch CNN and that I'd phone him back, I phone him back and he says, here's what we got and here's what we can do for you" Most people had seen CNN but he had no clue why I was asking him to do this, and he had idea I was asking him what can you do for me, and he's like who the hell for you. I said, have you seen CNN, yes or no, and everything moved after that That was the only one ... They put the CNN screen in the ops room just before the towers fell, every now and then yo'd look up and see the buildings erasing donw, I didn't even know the petntagon had been hit until later in the afternoon because there had been so much activity and so many things going on Second row - SD2 position - making phone calls (780) 594-0995
