System Design 214 Course Notes, by R.J. MacKay and R.W. Oldford Available in the UW Bookstore
Assignments:
There will be 7 assignments from the Course Notes during the term. They are to help you learn the material, and are not to be submitted for marking. Solutions are included in the Notes. Any difficulties with assignment questions can be dealt with in a tutorial period. Suggested completion dates are shown below. Old quizzes with solutions are on the course website. These should also be done in order to properly learn the material.
Quizzes:
There will be 3 quizzes during the term to give you feedback and to “encourage” you to keep up with the material. These will be 40 minutes in length and will be written during the lecture periods on Oct. 3, Oct. 31, and Nov. 28. There is no midterm test.
Lab:
The lab is to be done in teams of two people, with one report submitted by each team. Part 1 is to be completed by the end of the lab on Oct. 19. Part 2 is to be submitted in class on Oct. 26.
Grading:
Quizzes count for 40%. Your worst quiz counts for 10%; each of the others counts for 15%. Part 1 of the Lab counts for a potential bonus of 1 mark added to your quiz mark, and Part 2 for a potential bonus of 2 marks, subject to a maximum final quiz mark of 40. Final exam counts for 60%. There are 2 exceptions to this formula: - If your quiz mark is at least 60% and your exam mark is higher, your final mark will be the exam mark. - If your final exam mark is below 45% your final mark will be ≤47% regardless of how high your quiz marks are.
