Summer Camp Dalan Elementary School July-Aug 2005 New: write a “letter to grandparents”, http://www.starfall.com/ , “grandparent” Grade 1 Topic: Family Alphabet Numbers Objectives: The Ss will be able to sing a song and introduce family members. They will be able to write the alphabet and identify phonics sounds. They will be able to count from 1-10. Materials: Emotions flashcards, Yahoo song, family member cut-outs (2-3 sets), storybook, dice, whiteboard, alphabet picture cards, alphabet writing boards, paper, crayons, name tags, newspaper Day One Period One Introduction Greetings, Attendance, How Are You? song with 8 emotions. Development New song: Mommy Finger Introduce family members using family cut-outs Vocabulary: mother, father, brother, sister, grandmother, grandfather Sentence pattern: “This is my ___.” Story: Does a Kangaroo Have a Mother, Too? by Eric Carle Ss repeat the refrain together. Game: Play a board game. Ss roll dice to move around the board game. They must introduce the family member they land on. They may draw the member on their score card. (One S is the team drawer—on board.) Teams collect family members to make a complete family of 6 members. The first team to get a complete family is the winner. Period Two Review alphabet Do the Alphabet Chant with picture cards. Game: Post the cards on the board. T says phonic or key word. Two Ss race to find the correct letter card. Write the alphabet (capital letters only) on laminated boards. T checks formation and phonics. Writing names Ss draw self-portrait and write their names in English letters under the picture. Game: Swat Sit in a big circle. One S is in the middle holding a rolled-up newspaper. One S in the circle begins by saying another S’s name. The middle S tries to swat the named S before the named S can say

another S’s name. If a S finally gets swatted before he/she can say a friend’s name, he/she must go in the middle. All Ss ask, “What’s your name?” S must answer. Repeat the game. Advanced: Ss must say “His/her name is ___” instead of simply the name. Variation: Try using English nicknames. Day Two Period One Kaboom game (MANY vocab cards. Review family, animals, colours. Ss at tables: Pass the can/cards, S takes one and must say it correctly to keep it. If someone gets a Kaboom, they may take the others’ cards —or roll a dice, then take that many cards from each of other Ss.) Song: How Many Animals Tarzan game. Groups must count 1-6, or say phrase “I see 5 fish.” Make a number book! Of course. Colour or draw, then write and read. Listening Race: Ss colour and cut out many of the same items: fish, bears, cats, farmers, etc. Velcro? Teams race to post number of items T says. Worksheet: find, colour and count hidden items???? I’m broke. ) Play: Team receives 500 to start. Team moves around board game. If they land on a family member (i.e. “uncle”) they may build a house for him, paying the designated amount to the bank. They also draw the family member on their score sheet. If another team lands on the square with the house, they must pay rent to the owner team. Continue until the time is up. A team gets 100 for each family member they have collected (only one kind of member per family). Bonus 500 if the team collects a complete family. Teams count money; the one with the most wins. Rules: English only. Use the phrases given for playing the game. Pay a fine (25) for speaking Korean. Teams must introduce the family member they build a house for. A few Ss may introduce the person to the class. Game: Finding Your Future Ss can reveal each other’s future. Select one S to have their future revealed. Ss list four items in each category: Spouse’s name, Age at marriage, Job, House, Place to live, Number of Boys, Number of Girls, Car Ss count off with designated number, crossing off each item landed on. Last item remaining in each category is the truth!
