SUMMARY Resident: January 2008 The article of the Civil war and the Franco Dictatorship. - In the middle of Girona’s cemetery two roughly hewn standing stones face each other across a long, narrow path. Along either side of the footpath, the walls are covered with scores of simple plaques, each bearing a name and a date. One of the heavy stones commemorates those from Girona who were killed by the Nazis. The other is to mark a mass grave for the 519 people who were lined up against the cemetery walls and shot during the six years following the end of the Spanish civil war in 1939. They were among the estimated 200,000 Spaniards executed for alleged political crimes during the 36 years of authoritarian rule by General Francisco Franco. While it is now 32 years this month since the dictator’s death, campaigners and relatives of those who suffered at the hands of the regime are still seeking justice for their loved ones. Personal stories. The associació de familiars de represaliats pel franquisme, set up by Esther Llorenç and her mother, has published a series of books giving accounts of the trials and imprisonment of hundreds of people caught up in the post civil war reprisals. The testimonies shed some light on the harrowing aftermath of the confrontation between Republicans and Nationalists.
