Stereotypes
A man was driving with his son, when the car was struck by another vehicle. The man was killed instantly, but his son, injured, was rushed to hospital. The surgeon came into the operating theatre, gasped and said: ‘But this is my son’. How is this possible?
Address Terms • Men are usually only ‘Mr’, whereas women can be ‘Mrs’, ‘Ms’ or ‘Miss’ • why doesn’t men’s marital status matter for their names? • What does Ms mean?
Diminutive Suffixes • Using ‘ess’ or ‘ette’ on the ends of words to make them ‘feminine’ – e.g. actor/actress. • What is a: – caravanette? – kitchenette? – suedette? – ladette?
Lexical Asymmetry • Pairs of words which seem to be equal (e.g. sir/madam) often are not, with the female term having been degraded in some way. – What are the other, negative meanings of madam? – What is the difference between master and mistress? – King and queen?
Marked Terms • We have to say ‘lady (or woman/female) doctor’ because people assume doctors are men. Equally, ‘male nurse’ is needed, because nurses are taken to be female. • First impressions: Man or woman? – prostitute – plumber – nurse – model – bus driver
Semantic Fields • Terms for women often derive from items of food, clothing or animals. – THINK: – What nouns are used by men for/to/about women, then group them. – What insults are used by men for/to/about women – What terms of endearment are used by men for/to/about women – Can you do the same except this time
