1 0verview of SS7 management
1 Overview of 557 management This chapter provides you with the following basics you need for managing SS7 configuration: the principles of SS7 management and the objects you can manage, information about functional dependencies that impact the interaction of SS7 components, a description of the Standard and Advanced modes in the SS7 management GUI, tasks that you can manage using the SS7 management GUI.
1•1
About 557 management This section describes the principles of SS7 management and the objects you can manage.
1•1•1 About 5ignaling Point Codes Signaling point codes identify the end points of a Signaling Link (SL) connection. The SS7 system uses 3 types of point codes: Local Point Code (LPC) — identifies the unique entry point to the local SS7 subsystem. There can be only one local point code per logical network sub- system. 0nce created, a Local Point Code cannot be modified. Destination Point Code (DPC) — identifies the remote signaling termination point of a signaling link route. This can be the same as the Adjacent Point Code. Adiacent Point Code — identifies an adjacent remote termination point of a signaling link route. This can be the same as the DPC.
1•1•2 About Link 5ets A Link Set contains up to 16 signaling links. A signaling link is a permanent connection between 2 end points. A signaling link can only exist in the context of a Link Set so you need to create a Link Set to have a functional signaling link. Load sharing Load sharing between links in a Link Set is a method according to which the total signaling load on a Link Set is shared between 2 or more working signaling links. The choice of the load sharing rule depends on the number of signaling links in the Link Set. 5ignaling Link 5ets
A signaling Link Set is a group of 1 to 16 signaling links. All links in a Link Set share the following common characteristics: same error correction method, same adjacent point code. When you add a new signaling link to a Link Set you increase the transmission capacity of the Link Set. In normal operation, links share the signaling load. If necessary, any single link can carry the full load. Each signaling link that connects to an adjacent SP is clearly identified by an SLC. The link should have the same SLC at each of the 2 end points of the signaling network.
1•1•3 About Route 5ets Routes sets contain from 1 to 4 Link Sets. Traffic distribution across Link Sets within a Route Set is determined by a load sharing rule.
Note: 0nce a Route Set is created it can be deleted but not modified. Load sharing Load sharing between link sets in a Route Set is a method according to which the total signaling load on a Route Set is shared between 2 or more working signaling link sets. The choice of the load sharing rule depends on the number of signaling link sets in the Route Set.
1•1•4 About Destination Point Codes The DPC identifies the remote end of a signaling link connection. It usually identi- fies the remote system on a network node by its SubSystem Number (SSN). When the SSN is unknown a Global Title translation reassigns the DPC to a different DPC on the remote system which may be an Adjacent Point Code.
1•1•5 About 5CCP Point Codes The SCCP point code identifies an MTP access point to enable transfer of user data through MTP layers to the SCCP layer. There are 2 types of SCCP point codes:
local— identifies network characteristics and maps the LPC to a MTP_3 ac- cess point for a each defined logical network on the NE. remote — identifies network characteristics and maps each DPC in the sys- tem to the remote MTP_3 access point. The SCCP point code provides support for both connection and connectionless mode SCCP services.
1•1•6 About 5CCP Access Points The SCCP access point provides local or remote access to SCCP services for SS7 user applications. It is used to describe the availability status of the local or remote subsystem. Each subsystem connection requires a different SCCP access point. Multiple Global Titles (GTs) can translate to the same SCCP access point.
1•1•7 About 5CCP translation and GTs A Global Title (GT) is a logical or virtual address used to route SS7 SCCP mes- sages. Its purpose is to isolate SCCP applications and data from changes in the network to ensure correct routing regardless of modifications to network elements. If the DPC is not known, the GT must be translated. A DPC is the result of a GT translation.
The Translation Selector selects a GT translation based on a combination of val- ues: nature of address, translation type, numbering plan. If there is no GT translation a routing failure will result.
1•1•8 About logical networks The Logical Network (LN) is a notion provided by the platform. It allows you to define several independent networks on the same platform. Each Logical Network has: an originating point code, a set of signaling links, signaling link sets, signaling routes, signaling route sets. All the Point Codes in the same Logical Network have the same length (14 or 24 bits) and the same Network Indicator (National/International). Narrowband and broadband networks are defined in different Logical Networks.
1•2
Functional dependencies
1•2•1 About dependencies Due to functional dependencies, SS7 components should be created and config- ured in a particular sequence. Because some components "depend" upon the existence of other components they cannot be created until the prerequisite com- ponents have been created and configured.
Note: Although Advanced SS7 functions are beyond the scope of this
document, much of the information in this chapter refers to Advanced functions because it is helpful to understand how all components operate together in the SS7 system.
1•2•2 Channel connection dependencies The SS7 system supports two types of Data Link device that serve as channel con- nection interfaces: narrowband — for Pulse Code Modulation (PCM) devices, broadband — for Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) devices.
Narrowband connection dependenci es
To create a narrowband connection you need to create and define a PCM device profile. The PCM device profile contains a number of configurable components that, together, define all required device connection parameters. Due to certain functional dependencies you need to create and configure connec- tion components in a particular order. See the SS7 management key procedures in Chapter 2. Figure 1 illustrates PCM dependencies. In the figure, arrows point from objects that depend upon objects the arrow points toward.

Broadband connection dependencies To create a broadband Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) Virtual Circuit (VC) connection you need to configure an ATM device profile. Because the ATM device connection depends upon certain functional components, the ATM connection profile should be defined in a particular configuration se- quence. See the SS7 management key procedures in Chapter 2. Figure 2 illustrates broadband dependencies. In the figure, arrows point from objects that depend upon objects the arrow points toward.
Figure 2: ATM profile dependencies (broadband)
1•2•3 Route 5et and Link 5et dependencies This section provides information to help you understand the functional depen- dencies for Route Set and Link Set components. A Route Set may contain from 1 to 4 Link Sets. Although each Link Set may contain up to 16 signaling links, there is a global limit of 16 signaling links inside a single Route Set. Due to functional dependencies you need to create and configure components in a particular sequence. See the SS7 management key procedures in Chapter 2. Figure 3 illustrates the functional dependencies between Route Set and Link Set components. In the figure, arrows point from objects that depend upon objects the arrow points toward. Grayed boxes represent components that are controlled by Advanced functions.
Figure 3: Route Set and Link Set dependencies
1•2•4 5CCP connection dependencies This section describes the functional dependencies between SCCP components. There is only one SCCP connection per NE.
Note: A Local Point Code (LPC) or a Destination Point Code (DPC) must already exist before you can configure an SCCP connection.
Due to functional dependencies you need to create and configure SCCP com- ponents in a particular sequence. See the SS7 management key procedures in Chapter 2. Figure 4 illustrates functional dependencies between SCCP components. In the figure, arrows point from objects that depend upon objects the arrow points to- ward. Grayed boxes represent components that are controlled by Advanced func- tions.
Figure 4: SCCP dependencies
SCCP Load sharing
A load sharing algorithm distributes the SCCP traffic with GT translation between remote SCCP relays or remote Destination Point Codes. This load sharing algorithm distributes the SCCP traffic equally between the sig- nalling links of the signalling link set. In-sequence delivery for SCCP class 1 and 2 must be guaranteed at transaction level. All messages belonging to one transaction have to take the same path. This load share can handle up to 16 remote SCCP nodes in balanced or dominant mode. The information is given in 5 CCP Enti ty 5 et (Advanced mode).
Locking/unlocking SCCP local subsystem A local SCCP subsystem can be locked or unlocked: by operator commands (by modifying the 5tatus parameter in SCCP Access Point management), by the application (primitive upper layer N-STATE request). The operator can override this if required.
1•3 About 5tandard and Advanced modes
The SS7 Management GUI provides two modes of operation:
5tandard , and Advanced .
Standard mode The
5tandard mode includes all comma nds and function s contain ed in the main menu. These function s enable operato rs to perform basic system maintenance operatio ns. Th e SS 7 St an da rd mo de ma in me nu is sh ow n in Fig ur e 5.

Configuring 5CCP connection components A Local Point Code (LPC) or a Destination Point Code (DPC) must already exist before you can configure an SCCP connection.
Note: For Standard SS7 Management GUI users it
is presumed that Advanced function components are already configured in the system so you only need to select them from a drop-down list.
SCCP connection components
To create an SCCP connection, you need to configure related components in the following sequence:
5CCP prof i le — refers to other components and is the last component to create. 5 CCP connecti on oriented prof i le — defines management infor- mation for connectionoriented services SC0C on a particular SCCP.
5 C C P Point Code — identifies an MTP Access Point to enable transfer of user data through MTP layers. Concerned Area — contains a list of remote SCCPs (MTP Access Points and SCCP linkages) to be informed in the event of local or remote broadcasts, SCCP subsystem status changes, or changes to SCCP status after a restart of the SCCP. 5 CCP Access Point — provides status information about the remote SSN (allowed, prohibited, congested) associated with the remote SCCP Access Point. 5 CCP Entity 5 et — specifies the priority between two SCCP Access Points. The first linked Access Point is active and the second serves as a backup. Also specifies whether the message should be sent to an SCCP relay point. Translation 5 elector — refers to the Global Title encoding format. Global Title Group — used to allow Global Title translations. Global Title Conversion Rule — defines conversion rules for the called party address. These management rules apply to the called party's DPC, SSN, GT and routing information. Calling Party Address — defines how the calling party address is managed. You can configure on/off switches for 0PC, SSN, GT and routing information. Global Title — enables Global Title translation when the DPC is not known. Use the following sequence when configuring SCCP connection components: 1• Create an 5 C C P prof i le . 2• Create an 5 CCP connection oriented prof i le.
