MCC Receives Three New Easements

Board of Directors Frank Smietana, President

At the end of last year, MCC received an incredibly generous donation of three new conservation easements totaling just over 6 acres from Robert and Barbara Biesterfeldt, 7511 Sargent Road. The Biesterfeldt easements preserve critical open space that was formerly the McVay popcorn and pumpkin farm, one of the last vestiges of the Mud Creek valley’s agricultural heritage. Long time residents fondly recall the Halloween hayrides and pumpkin market in the late 80’s when the farm was still operational. Even before the donation took place, the Biesterfeldt easements began to serve as a Hoosier Riverwatch site for a local school group, with students enthusiastically establishing a record of Mud Creek's water quality.

After purchasing their home on Sargent Road in 2005, the Biesterfeldts were fortunately able to purchase the adjoining 11 acres, with the intention of maintaining it as a haven for native plants and wildlife.

Soon after acquiring the adjacent acreage, the Biesterfeldts contacted MCC and www.MudCreekConservancy.org started exploring various avenues such as conservation easements to permanently protect the undeveloped portion of the acreage, culminating in the [email protected] December donation two years later. The donation proceeded even as Mr. Biesterfeldt suffered a stroke over Thanksgiving! (continued on Page 2)

MCC Easement Donation (continued from Page 1) "It is our hope that others will feel free to ask us about the procedure for donating easements on their land”, states Barbara, and to help facilitate that goal the Biesterfeldts have placed a sign on their property identifying the easement. This is the first MCC easement marked by signage and will help publicize MCC's mission throughout the Mud Creek valley.

GIS Mapping of MCC Properties Completed Last year, MCC participated in an initiative headed by Ducks Unlimited to develop a comprehensive, web-based GIS-based map of protected open space and wildlife habitat spanning the entire United States. The database helps to pinpoint areas underserved by land trusts and other conservation organizations, and illuminates areas that might benefit from cooperative efforts between local groups and government agencies. MCC Partners with Center for Urban Ecology MCC Recieves Record Donation from Fund The Environmental Fund of Indiana, an umbrella organization of the state's affiliated nonprofit environmental groups recently donated $500 to help fund MCC's conservation initiatives in the Mud Creek watershed. Aside from previously awarded foundation and corporate grants this marks a new single record donation amount for MCC.

Butler University's Center for Urban Ecology (CUE), headed by longtime MCC biodiversity consultant Dr. Rebecca Dolan, has received a $100,000 grant from the Nina Mason Pulliam Foundation to help underwrite the Center's environmental research and educational initiatives in the greater Indianapolis area. Thanks to MCC's partnership with Professor Dolan and Dr. Travis Ryan, MCC is looking forward to working with Butler students on various projects such as habitat enhancement and restoration, biodiversity inventories and stewardship of our portfolio of conservation easements.
