UNIVERSITI PENDIDIKAN SULTAN IDRIS TKU 3023 INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION IN CHEMISTRY SPREADSHEET TITTLE : CHARLES’ LAW GROUP : B PREPARED BY : ALIA FATEHA BT ZAINUDDIN D20081032312 NAZIRAH ADILAH BT SHAMSUL BAHARIM D20081332267 PREPARED FOR : MADAM HASMAYATI

EMPOWER 1) Student plan an experiment to determine the relationship between temperature and volume in order to verify Charles’s Law. THE APPARATUS AND MATERIAL

2) Students are given the following apparatus and chemicals : •

15 Syringes (10 mL)

15 Rubber stoppers

15 Plastic cups (10 oz/low)

15 Thermometers (-10 to 110 deg. C)

15 Beakers (256 mL)

15 Styrofoam cups medium (optional)

Microburners

1 Timer/class

Water

Ice

3) Students need to plan an experiment to determine the relationship between the temperature and volume. 4) Students have to construct a hypothesis before doing the experiment. 5) The procedures of conducting the experiment is discussed. 6) Using the formula of V/T = k (constant) Where V (volume) = volume of gas and T (temperature) = the reading of thermometer, students are to find the value of ‘k’ using the spreadsheet program. How to set up the spreadsheet. 1.

Click on cell C3, enter the formula =B:B+273(this work out the temperature in Kelvin).

Press enter. 2.

Copy cell C3, then paste it into cell C4 until C10.

How to draw a graph with the spreadsheet 1.

Highlight cells D3 until D9

2.

Select a line graph. In the series box, click category x axis label and then highlight C3

until C9. 3.

Click next. Name the chart.

4.

Label the x-axis as “temperature” and y-axis as “ volume”.

QUESTIONS: 1. based on the graph, deduce the relationship between temperature and volume of gases on each of the following. a.

The effect of volume when temperature increase.

b.

The effect of volume when temperature decrease.

2. Why the pressure in this experiment must be constant?

ANSWERS: a. When the temperature increase, the volume of gases will increase. b. When the temperature decrease, the volume of gases will decrease. 2. The pressure in this experiment must be constant because pressure can effect the value of temperature and volume when pressure is vary. When the pressure increase, the volume will decrease according to Bole’s Law and make the value is not accurate.
