SCF-Krypton absorption spectrum The following absorption spectrum was taken from a quartz capillary mounted with a crystal of stem cell factor (SCF) in krypton at approximately 5 atm pressure.

The interesting question arises: where is the krypton more concentrated? in the gas, or in the crystal?

Gas (assuming 5 atm) L • atm   n  P =   RT = ( C )  8.21 × 10 −2  ( 298K ) V  mol • K  5atm C= ≈ 0.2 M   −2 L • atm )(298K   8.21 × 10   mol • K

Crystal (assuming one site) Va = 34,773Α3 = 3.4773 × 10 −23 L 1atom 1mole    C=   ≈ 0.05 M  3.4773 × 10 −23 L   6.02 × 1023 atoms 

Therefore, the krypton gas surrounding the crystal accounts for the most of the absorption.
