2 WDM EXTENSION (ABQA-AINDAR4 & APS3-RIYADH REFINERY) 2.1 OVERVIEW Alcatel-Lucent is pleased to provide hereafter a comprehensive proposal covering a complete range of systems to answer STESA request for new 1626LM DWDM LINKS within Aramco BI74 project. This proposal therefore represents our understanding of FSD03 (Transmission System Upgrade) and is submitted in accordance with our Statement of Compliance to this FSD, attached as Annex 1 to this document The solution proposed is based on DWDM 1626LM equipment and has been designed according to the latest international regulations. It will ensure a state of art transmission network based on the selection of products, which ensure potential for future extension of the whole system tailored to your needs. Purpose of this technical description is to give a detailed explanation and overview of the optical DWDM solution including the services to extend the WDM network as requested in BI74 project. The proposed network consists of two separated DWDM links : APS3 - B-345(RIYADH Refinery). ABQA - AIN4 This offer doesn’t include any extension in the existing WDM network. The requested Extension will be managed separately with Aramco.

2.3 NETWORK DESIGN The DWDM network design is done for two separate links. 1626LM DWDM equipments to be installed in each of the following sites, APS3,Riyadh refinery, ABQA and AIN4. Two types of solution are proposed. In the case of APS3 to Riyadh refinery the distance between the 2 sites is 150Km! As there is no possibility to add ILA in between, we are providing a solution with LH equipment & design. In the case of ABQA to Ain4 , we extend the existing link using the same Metro config. We are adapting the Terminal in ABQA to become an OADM and we are providing a new terminal in AIN4. In the following chapters are described the two links.

Existing equipment
In ABQA is added a Mux/demux and the necessary amplifiers, as well as the S64.2 TPD & the 10GBE TPD. In Aindar4 is installed a new rack & a 1626LM shelf housing the common part as well as the S64.2 TPD & the 10GBE TPD. Note: Specific case of S64.2 TPD. In fact the target is to transport through the WDM an STM64 which was before connected directly to the fibre. So from the client side the existing interface is L64.2. But we don’t need in the new case such power-full interface as the distance from the client equipment to the TPD is short. So we will provide an S64.2 interface + 6dB attenuators to be able to interconnect the client to the transponders without burning the receiver!
Note 2 : the extension in the existing network are not part of this offer.

2.3.3 Link Design Parameter The design target is to have 8x10Gbps capable links, fully compliant to the requirement of Aramco. According to the DWDM network technical specification, one lambda will be launched to accommodate the initial traffic requirement at the beginning. As for links to be deployed with G.655 (E-Leaf) optical fibre, the following given parameters have been taken into account for the link loss calculation.
G.652 Cable Loss of 0.25 db/km at 1550 nm
G.652 Dispersion of maximum 20 ps.nm/km allowable on the traffic port.
3 dB Equipment Margin per span
1 dB Connect Loss per span
With above parameters, the detailed link loss and system design is show in the following:

Saudi Aramco BI-10-00074 Data Network Replacement
The solution proposed is based on 1626LM; the detailed configurations of DWDM links are indicated in above figures. For each DWDM station, the Mux/Demux, Optical Amplifier (1110/1120), Transponder (TRBD) and DCU (Dispersion Compensation Unit) are equipped for regional application. The site type includes OADM.
2.3.4 Optical budget In order to have sufficient optical budget to cover the EOL loss calculated with the above parameters, specific type of Amplifiers are considered. Then a minimum Optical Signal-to-Noise Ration (OSNR) has to be guaranteed for each channel to ensure the acceptable EOL BER (10-12 or better).
The optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) estimates the “optical quality” of a signal. It represents the power ratio between the signal and the ASE noise contained in the 0.1-nm spectral region around the signal wavelength. The higher the channel OSNR, the lower is the noise on the signal bandwidth, and the larger the signal quality. Detailed analysis on the OSNR spectrum of all the sections has been performed. In the analysis, it is ensured that the ONSR spectrum for all the 8 channels is within the threshold. Please note that the OSNR measures the amount of noise on a channel, nevertheless the ultimate criterion for the signal quality in a transmission system is the bit-error-rate (BER). The BER is the ratio, measured over a given time window, of erroneous bits over the total number of transmitted bits. The BER does not depend on the OSNR only but also on the signal distortion, which is mainly produced by the interaction between chromatic dispersion and nonlinear effects. It is for this reason that it is not sufficient to reach the required OSNR to guarantee a correct performance, but it is also necessary to respect the nonlinear-effects power threshold and the dispersion mapping rules, as explained in the next paragraphs.
2.3.5 Chromatic Dispersion (CD) Analysis Each type of fibre has a specific wavelength-dependent coefficient, i.e. D ( ) [ps/nm*Km]. The accumulated CD is proportional to the fibre length. The CD is counteracted by means of DCM (Dispersion Compensation Module), which contains special fibre with a complementary D. The dispersion mapping is the process to compensate the chromatic dispersion by correctly distributing the DCM modules along the link. Due to the fibre dispersion slope, the accumulated dispersion can vary with the wavelength, and, if the DCM slope is not perfectly matched, the residual dispersion (that is the accumulated dispersion at the end of the link, after compensation) varies from channel to channel. The compensation of the fibre dispersion slope has a primary importance in limiting the maximum transmission distance. In fact, if the RDS (Residual Dispersion Slope) of the DCMs is not perfectly matched with the one of the transmission fibre, the difference in residual dispersion between the extreme channels of the spectrum will broaden with the transmission distance, rapidly exceeding the maximum tolerable range of 1400 ps/nm (from –500 to 900 ps/nm). The RDS could not be matched for several reasons, for instance:
When the dispersion and slope of the transmission fibre are different than the nominal value
When we could be obliged to use DCM’s not optimized for the operator’s fibre type (for example, we must use DCM’s optimized for G.652 also when we compensate for G.655 fibres: this leads, for E-Leaf to a maximum transmission distance of less than 500 km).

Thorough DCM mapping has been performed. Basically there are two important points to be considered:
That the residual dispersion of every channel should fall between –500 to 900 ps.nm
That the dispersion slope for the LEAF G.655 fibre is properly addressed.
The below figures indicates the DCM mapping for Link1 with distance of 150KM between APS3 and Riyadh refinery ,Link2 with distance of 65KM between ABQA and AIN4, respect the CD residual rule as specified above. Note; mapping drawing show both spans, Go and return for both links, 150KM and 65KM.
