Dream the destination... Live the Journey South America is a continent of unique extremes. Not only with regards to the weather - ranging from the sweltering heat of the northern Amazonian jungle to the icy breeze of the southernmost glaciers - but also with its diversity of cultures. You’ll find the cosmopolitan chic of European descendants contrasting with the rich cultural heritage of the indigenous people. The European immigrants that came to South American shores in the 1700’s have definitely influenced the way of life. The Café culture is big on this continent! Locals and visitors alike, love to wile away the hours over a “café-con-leche” (caffe latte) or a beer, whilst chatting or simply watching the world go by.

• What is LAGS? You may only carry liquids, aerosols and gels

On the beach in Rio Brazil, the perfect beach destination, a shoppers paradise, and the right choice if you wish to experience eco-tourism, see places of great historical and cultural interest and experience the primeval beauty of the Amazon rainforest. Rio literally welcomes its visitors with open arms: the vast statue of Christ the Redeemer stands open-armed on Corcovado Mountain overlooking the city below which stretches along the seashore of the famous Copacabana and Ipanema Beaches. At night, the districts of Copacabana, Ipanema, Leblon and Lagoa pulsate as people enjoy themselves at restaurants, theatres, clubs and bars. Rio's south zone is today one of Brazil's most fashionable shopping areas, with boutiques, shops, art galleries, etc. lining on both sides of Copacabana Avenue (Copacabana) and Visconde de Piraja (Ipanema). If you do not enjoy walking, you might prefer the Rio Sul or Barra shopping malls. Both are air-conditioned and feature some of Rio's most stylish boutiques and stores.

The Amazon is one of Brazil’s foremost tourist attractions. The largest tropical rainforest in the world, it boasts an eco-system beyond description. Rustic lodges in the primal jungle & cruises along the smaller tributaries are accessed from Manaus at the confluence of the Amazon and Rio Negro rivers. Another important ecological attraction is the Pantanal, marshlands in the Central West part of Brazil, famed for incredible birdlife. Iguassu Falls in Brazil’s South-West is one of the natural wonders of the world. A walk through the tropical rainforest that surrounds these magnificent waterfalls is an unforgettable experience.

Girl in traditional dress Lima, Peru’s capital, is the principal gateway to the country. Founded in 1535 on the site of an important Inca religious centre, this ‘City of Kings’ remained the seat of Spain’s New World Empire for 300 years. This history is featured in the old city’s architecture and museums, whilst the suburbs of Miraflores and San Isidro offer the comforts of modern living - shopping, nightlife & restaurants. Imbued with a magical silence, 120km from Cusco on the slopes above the Urubabamba River, lies one of the world’s most extraordinary archaeological sites. Built entirely of stone, some also consider it to be a mystical place that exudes vital energy. Machu Picchu is remarkable for its solid construction, its well-balanced use of space and the harmony of the design with its natural surroundings. The Great Inca Empire was comprised of four regions located over the actual territories of

Argentina, Bolivia, Ecuador, Colombia, Chile and Peru. This was connected through a vast network of roads that was called Qapaqñan (the Sovereign’s highway) or Inka Road. It was more than 23,000 kms (14000 miles) of road and was built of stone pathways, suitable for the traffic of two or three people with a herd of Ilamas. Rivers were crossed by hanging bridges and the steep slopes were conquered with stairways and ramps. Today, hiking the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu allows the visitor to step back in time and walk through a variety of eco-systems and dazzling scenery. The length of the 39km hike includes unforgettable views, flora and fauna. The trek is rated moderate and any reasonably fit person should be able to cover the route. The number of trekkers allowed to start the trek has  been limited to about 200 people per day (500 people in total including guides, cooks and porters)  making it essential to book your trek at least 3 months in advance (6 months in advance for peak season May - September). See page 18 for an Inca Trail Tour.
