The following section provides information that helps draw comparisons among colleges in The Newman Guide and identifies some unique characteristics. It is presented to complement the material in the profiles, and it is a selective snapshot of some key points.
General Information There are eight colleges or universities in this Guide that have full-time undergraduate enrollment of more than 1,000 students. They are, in descending order: The Catholic University of America, Franciscan University of Steubenville, University of St. Thomas, Mount St. Mary’s University, DeSales University, University of Dallas, Benedictine College and Belmont Abbey College. There are seven colleges that have fulltime undergraduate enrollment of fewer than 100 students. The smallest is Holy Apostles College & Seminary, followed by John Paul the Great Catholic University, Wyoming Catholic College, Our Lady Seat of Wisdom Academy, The College of Saint Thomas More, Magdalen College and The Thomas More College of Liberal Arts. Seven colleges offer more than two dozen majors. These are, in order of number of majors, The Catholic University of America, Benedictine College, DeSales University, University of Dallas, Franciscan University of Steubenville, University of St. Thomas and Mount St. Mary’s University.

On the other hand, four colleges have only one “major.” These are Magdalen College, The College of Saint Thomas More, Thomas Aquinas College and Wyoming Catholic College. Mount St. Mary’s University, which was founded in 1808 and is currently celebrating its bicentennial, is the second-oldest college Catholic in the U.S. The newest in this Guide is Wyoming Catholic College, which opened its doors in September 2007. Wyoming Catholic College became the first Catholic college in that state, just as Southern Catholic College became the first in Georgia in 2005. Both states are experiencing rising Catholic populations. The Catholic University of America is a pontifical university founded by U.S. Catholic bishops as a national graduate institution in Washington, D.C., in 1887. A Great Books focus is emphasized at Magdalen College, Thomas Aquinas College, The College of Saint Thomas More, The Thomas More College of Liberal Arts and Wyoming Catholic College. Belmont Abbey College and Ave Maria University have been especially creative in developing new scholarships to attract Catholic students.

The Catholic University of America and the University of Dallas have Phi Beta Kappa chapters. Magdalen College awards every qualifying graduate an Apostolic Catechetical Diploma in addition to a bachelor of arts degree. Among popular Catholic publications that are based on a campus are Envoy magazine at Belmont Abbey College and Second Spring: An International Journal of Faith and Culture at The Thomas More College of Liberal Arts. Franciscan University of Steubenville announced in 2007 that it began co-publication of the 86-year-old European Catholic publication The Sower. Several other colleges sponsor scholarly publications. The University of Dallas, Christendom College and The Thomas More College of Liberal Arts sponsor one-semester studyabroad programs that all or most of their students attend, usually in the sophomore year. Magdalen College and The College of Saint Thomas More have short foreign study programs. Franciscan University of Steubenville has a program in Gaming, Austria. Several of the other colleges have some arrangements for students to study abroad.

Colleges that are primarily commuter schools are Holy Apostles College & Seminary, Aquinas College and the University of St. Thomas. The College of Saint Thomas More appeals to non-traditional students. Only about 25 percent of incoming freshmen enter from high school. Most of the students are in their 20s while some are in their 30s or older. Nearly 80 percent of students at Aquinas College are women. The University of St. Thomas has the most ethnically diverse student body. Nearly one-half of undergraduates are non-white and about one-third are Hispanic. Christendom College, Thomas Aquinas College, Our Lady Seat of Wisdom Academy, Ave Maria University, Magdalen College and The Thomas More College of Liberal Arts have attracted significant numbers of homeschooled students. Franciscan University is a prime example of a one-time troubled Catholic college that turned itself around to become one of the gems of U.S. Catholic higher education. Magdalen College requires all students to participate in its vocal music program every year. the U.S.) with John Paul the Great Catholic University. Mount St. Mary’s University is the only Guide-recommended college that participates in NCAA Division I sports. It also has a unique program where seminarians serve as team chaplains for each of its 19 intercollegiate sports teams.
Specific Programs DeSales University offers a major in marriage and the family. The major finds its inspiration in the teaching of Pope John Paul II’s Theology of the Body. Ave Maria University and Franciscan University of Steubenville offer majors in sacred music. The Catholic University of America and DeSales University have extensive drama departments. Belmont Abbey College’s Abbey Players dates back to 1883. John Paul the Great Catholic University has an unusual niche, focusing on business entrepreneurship and training leaders in New Media, including the entertainment industry. Mount St. Mary’s University has two cooperative health-related programs with other universities. There is a five-year program in biology and nursing (two bachelor’s degrees) with The Johns Hopkins University and a six-year undergraduate-graduate program in occupational therapy with Sacred Heart University. Undergraduate degrees in nursing also are available at Aquinas College, The Catholic University of America, DeSales University and Franciscan University of Steubenville.

DeSales University also has a notable undergraduate and graduate Physician Assistant program. As part of its community outreach, students in the program launched the DeSales Free Clinic for homeless people in Allentown, Pennsylvania, in 2007. Faculty members and students operate it. The Catholic University of America offers an undergraduate degree in engineering. The University of St. Thomas has cooperative agreements for dual-degree programs in the fields of engineering and technology with Texas A & M University, University of Houston and the University of Notre Dame. Among The Catholic University’s 12 schools is the School of Architecture and Planning, which offers a bachelor’s degree in architecture as well as professional and post-professional master’s degrees. It is the only recommended college with an architecture program. Belmont Abbey College, located near the capital of NASCAR racing in Charlotte, North Carolina, has a unique major in motor sports management, complete with an internship. Sports management programs are offered at Belmont Abbey College, DeSales University, Franciscan University of Steubenville and Mount St. Mary’s University. Wyoming Catholic College has an equestrian program as part of its required curriculum. Religious Matters Colleges with a percentage of Catholic students greater than 90 percent are Ave Maria University, Christendom College, Franciscan University of Steubenville, Holy Apostles College & Seminary, John Paul the Great Catholic University, Magdalen College, Our Lady Seat of Wisdom Academy and Thomas Aquinas College. Belmont Abbey College, Benedictine College and St. Gregory’s University are Benedictine institutions with abbeys on the grounds. DeSales University is affiliated with the Oblates of St. Francis de Sales (Salesians), Franciscan University of Steubenville with the Third Order Regular of St. Francis (T.O.R.), University of St. Thomas with the Congregation of St. Basil (Basilians), and Holy Apostles College & Seminary with the Society of the Missionaries of the Holy Apostles. Aquinas College is the only institution in the Guide run by religious sisters, in this case the Dominican Sisters of the Congregation of Saint Cecilia (“Nashville Dominicans”). The Dominican Sisters operate a coed elementary-middle school and a girls’ high school on Aquinas College campus grounds. At The College of Saint Thomas More, there is a small preparatory school for students aged 12 to 18 on campus. About onequarter of the graduates of Lady Margaret Roper School eventually enroll at the college. 244
Ave Maria Grammar and Preparatory School opened at Ave Maria University with 140 students in August 2007. The K-12 school includes teachers from the Dominican Sisters of Mary, Mother of the Eucharist. Recommended colleges that have seminarians who are an integral part of the lay institution are Holy Apostles College & Seminary and Mount St. Mary’s University. Mount St. Mary’s University’s seminary is known as the “Cradle of Bishops” because it has produced 48 bishops, including one 19th-century cardinal. Saint Elizabeth Ann Bayley Seton, the first American-born saint, was involved in the early history of Mount St. Mary’s University, including its founding. The Catholic University of America has as its next-door neighbor the magnificent Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, the nation’s largest Catholic church. Thomas Aquinas College, Christendom College and Magdalen College have produced large numbers of vocations. About one-tenth of the students/graduates of each college has entered the priesthood or religious life. The Thomas More College of Liberal Arts announced in July 2007 that it was setting up two funds that should help remove one impediment to vocations. The Saint John Vianney Fund for Future Priests and The Saint Mother Katherine Drexel Fund for Future Nuns will absorb student loans accumulated by its graduates who are going into a seminary or convent. Southern Catholic College, which opened in 2005, has a five-member board of fellows, whose only role is to evaluate and uphold the Catholic identity of the college.
St. Gregory’s University has a unique and highly regarded Buckley Outreach Team, which sponsors retreats for Catholic junior high and high school students in Oklahoma, Texas and Arkansas.
The University of Dallas School of Ministry provides religious outreach through its graduate, deaconate and online courses. Thirty-seven Texas parishes were represented at its Catholic Bible School graduation ceremony in May 2007.
The Fellowship of Catholic University Students (FOCUS), an outreach and evangelization program primarily located on secular college campuses, has chapters at Benedictine College and the University of St. Thomas.
Franciscan University of Steubenville pioneered an extensive household residential program, which provides living quarters in an atmosphere that encourages various forms of spiritual activity. Ave Maria University has developed a similar program.
Evening Rosary walks are very popular at Ava Maria University. They include Father Joseph Fessio, S.J., the university’s Theologian in Residence. He received his doctorate in theology from the University of Regensburg (Germany), where he studied under then-Professor Joseph Ratzinger (now Pope Benedict XVI).
Among the less common Catholic student organizations are Aquinas College’s Frassati Society, named for Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati, an early 20th-century Dominican tertiary who exemplified the Beatitudes; and Ave Maria University’s Communion and Liberation group, dedicated to studying the works of the late Monsignor Luigi Giovanni Giussani, an Italian who founded the Comunione e Liberazione movement.
One of the founders and advisory board members of Our Lady Seat of Wisdom Academy is Canadian Catholic novelist and painter Michael O’Brien. He is the author of Father Elijah: An Apocalypse, Strangers and Sojourners and Sophia House.
Benedictine College and Franciscan University of Steubenville have large campus ministry organizations, and many others have active programs.
