PTP 301 SOLID STATE PHYSICS 3 Cr. (2 Lecture + 3 Practical)
• Prerequisites: PTP 201, Offered in fall. • Introduction to the basic concepts of the quantum theory of solids. Topics: periodic structure and • symmetry of crystals, diffraction, reciprocal lattice, chemical bonding, lattice dynamics, phonons, • thermal properties, free electron gas model of metals, bloch theorem and band structure, nearly • free electron approximation, tight binding method, fermi surface, semiconductors, electrons, • holes, impurities, optical properties, excitons, and magnetic properties.
Over all aims of work • The purpose of this course is to give an introductory account of the basic principles of solid state physics. • Help the students who wish to obtain sound background of the physics of condensed mater. It is of value for the metallurgist, the engineer and the researcher in this field. • It lays down the foundation of the basic knowledge and the physical principles required in building up the physics of the solid – state.
•
The nowadays great advance in industrial fields and modern technology, raised on immediate need for a better understanding and control of the properties of materials.
•
Learn the students the basic aspects, techniques and models use for dealing and elucidation the suitable materials necessary for a required applications.
