UBU Societies and Student Development Officer

A bi g h el lo an d a v ery w arm we lc ome t o the Univ ers it y of Bristol. At UBU we are very fortunate to have approximately 190 student led societies and the variety and contrast between them all is massive. There is everything from the Power K iting Society to the Breakdancing Society to the Chocolate Society! Our societies give students a great opportunity to get involved with either an interest they have had for years or something they have never done before and just want to give it a go. It’s all at a fraction of the normal cost too. The societies help form the beating heart of student life at Bristol by allowing members to meet like minded people and develop life long skills. 68

Introduction

W h at eve r y ou r i n te re s ts ar e th e re i s something for you at UBU and most societies base themselves in the Union building so it’s easy to get involved. Make sure that you come along to the F r e s h e r s F a i r and sign up to the societies you want to be involved with, but if you miss out you can still sign up right through the year. Find out more information about societies at www.ubu.org.uk/societies .

You can help run societies ! All societies are democratically run by students for students. This process offers opportunities to all students to help run and lead the societies they’re involved with. Each year every society will have an AGM (Annual General Meeting) to elect a new committee to run their affairs.

Societies In being on a society committee you give yourself the opportunity to improve your society for the better, gain valuable personal skills, have great experiences with those you’re working with and gain a massive sense of personal achievement. This links into the other half of my job which is helping provide personal development training to UBU members, especially society leaders. After you finish university and enter the work place it is important to have other skills than those acquired from a degree. The student development unit helps to train society leaders, and others, in skills of problem solving, time management, finance, leadership, and many other areas.

Gaining these skills can really help a student’s personal growth.

Society Support The main support and advice channel for societies comes from the Societies Officer. My office is on the 3rd floor of the Union building and is open during the day through term time. There is also a Societies Exec committee to help with society affairs, specialising in such things as I.T., sponsorship and technical issues. So, if you ever need help with a society matter please do not hesitate to get in contact. One of the best society events of the year is the Society Awards. This allows other society leaders to vote for which

Societies MUSIC THEATRE BRISTOL (separate auditions of both singers & instrumentalists for each production) Rehearsals: to be arranged President: Margot Johnston Music Theatre Bristol provides the opportunity for almost anyone to get involved in musical based theatre as a performer or as part of a production team. Every show we produce utilizes a full band/orchestra, and we are always looking for more people to get involved in this capacity. To find out more please contact the President ([email protected]).

SYMPHONIA (no audition) Bristol Grammar School (across the road from The Hawthorns) Rehearsals: Wednesdays 7.00 – 9.30 President: Joan Patrick Symphonia is a relaxed, un-auditioned orchestra which plays exciting music with the emphasis on having fun. If you enjoy playing orchestral music, but don’t want the pressure that can sometimes come with playing in a school or county orchestra, then Symphonia is for you. Symphonia’s repertoire ranges from Vaughan Williams to John Williams, and from Beethoven to the Beatles - so whichever department you are from, come along and enjoy our informal rehearsal atmosphere. In addition, this year we shall be looking for a student to conduct the orchestra for a couple of pieces – come and see us at FRESH or email the committee for more details! ([email protected] or [email protected]).

One audition covers both Symphony Orchestra and Chamber Orchestra and, likewise, the University Singers and Chamber Choir. All players and singers (including members of last year’s ensembles) need to audition - nobody has an automatic right to a place in any ensemble. TIMETABLES will be posted in the Victoria Rooms at the beginning of Introductory Week so you can sign up for an audition - if you turn up without having booked a time, you will not be able to audition. At your audition, you will be asked to perform a short piece of your own choosing and to take a sight-reading test. The piece should be chosen with a view to showing off both technical proficiency and tone quality. CONCERT & REHEARSAL SCHEDULES for the whole year will be available at the audition so you can see what membership of the various ensembles involves. Larger trips are organised at weekends to visit caving areas in other parts of the country and summer expeditions are led to locations further afield.

LeRoc LeRoc is a type of modern jive, a combination of 1950's rock and roll and salsa moves. It is a very versatile dance style and can be danced to almost any music, from 1940's music right up to modern day chart or dance music. LeRoc is easy to learn and very sociable. The society has a fun relaxed atmosphere. There is no need to come to lessons with a partner as you keep switching. We learn individual moves, which can be easily combined instead of learning routines, so missing lessons is not a problem. Our lessons are on Thursday evenings in the Union and are aimed at beginners. Nightline is a confidential information and listening service run by students for students between 8pm and 8am. Our service is looking for volunteers to answer calls and emails a few nights a term. No previous experience is needed as full training is provided. The society provides many opportunities to meet fellow volunteers - from shifts, to training, to regular meetings and socials. It is also an excellent way of helping fellow students and making a difference. J o i n i n g i s a b s ol u t e l y f r e e - f i n d u s a t F r e sh . [email protected] or phone 01179 266 266

The highlight of last year had to be the Classics Ball, which was held at Java. The Hectic Fingers played a brilliant jazz set that set the tone for a funky evening. Socials throughout the year include pub crawls, along with the standard toga theme and trips to classical plays. However, there's the opportunity for something more educational too. We plan to have lectures from scholars around the UK who will give an exciting new dimension to the Classical experience at Bristol. There is also a Classics magazine in the pipeline.

It provides Football, Rugby, Netball and Basketball teams (boys' and girls' teams) to play against other depts, societies etc in the Intramural League, as well as friendlies with other Universities. We also arrange talks by visiting speakers on topics of interest as well as careers. We organise mad socials including the fearsome Pub Hunts, an Alton Towers trip, paintballing, etc. We have also had success with a parenting scheme for students in later years to assist and help Freshers.
