SNAAP Summer 2009! Welcome to the SNAAP summer! Some activities have restricted numbers and priority will be given to children living in the Canterbury District.

East Kent MENCAP Fun Day Friday 24th July 10am – 4pm

Riverside Youth Centre, Kingsmead Road, Canterbury CT2 7PH (behind Kingsmead leisure Centre) Suitable for all ages and abilities Entrance is FREE for everyone For disabled people of all ages, and their families, to try different sports and leisure activities including a Climbing Wall, Cricket, Cycling, Archery, Dance, Circus Skills, Golf, Music, Rowing, Crafts, Go Karts for children and much more! Visit the information point to find out about clubs and centres in your area. SNAAP will be there with all our sports equipment so come and support us! Refreshments available and picnic area provided. Under cover activities in case of bad weather. No need to book – just turn up! This event will be instead of the usual Sports Club session at Canterbury High School.

Museum of Kent Life with Accessible Boat Ride (optional) Tuesday 28th July Meet at 10.30am

Kent’s heritage farm attraction has much to offer including, an indoor & outdoor play area, hands on activity & animal cuddle corner. Summer fun includes piglet and ferret racing. Face painting and tractor trailer are available at a small additional charge. Most buildings have wheelchair access, with the exception of the first floors of the historic buildings. There are fully accessible toilets and dedicated parking. If you wish to take a ride on ‘The Kentish Lady’ the boat offers level entry for wheelchairs. The catamaran has huge glass windows making it ideal in all weathers. Tickets can be bought on the day. There are toilets on board, a bar serving hot and cold drinks, sandwiches and snacks. The return trip takes 1 hour.

Margate Beach

Wednesday 29th July Meet at 11am Margate Main Sands, Clock Tower end of the beach, down the slope on the beach Suitable for all ages FREE for everyone Join us for games, kites and building sandcastles! SNAAP will be on the sands with a gazebo, fun and games! Bring a picnic and all your beach items. You can also go into the town or visit the amusements.

Toy Library

Thursday 30th July 12 – 2pm

Windchimes, Reynolds Close, Herne Bay CT6 6DS Drop in and borrow Therapeutic, educational and stimulating toys including UV, musical and tactile equipment. Specialist books, story sacks and DVD’s. Try a toy with your child before considering purchasing. If you have not been to the toy library before, please bring two forms of ID with you. Annual membership is £2.50. Each item borrowed is £1 (larger items £2).

Inclusive Youth Club Family BBQ and Games Thursday 30th July 6.30 - 8.30pm

Riverside Youth Centre, Kingsmead Road, Canterbury CT2 7PH (behind Kingsmead leisure Centre) Age 11+ and all abilities FREE for everyone Riverside would like to invite all SNAAP members and their parents/carers to a fun social event. There will be a sports tournament and plenty of fun games followed by a BBQ and refreshments. A great opportunity to meet other parents, meet other SNAAP members and get to have fun with your child. Don’t forget to wear your trainers as there will be races for adults as well!

Farming World – Princess & Pirate Party Tuesday 4th August Meet at 10.30am at the entrance

Come and join us for a Princess & Pirate Party at Farming World! Dress up (optional) and join in the fun. There are loads of different species of animals as well as birds of prey. There is outdoor play including a wheelchair swing & an indoor soft play area. You can also paint some pottery or enjoy a tractor ride or a horse and cart ride, all at an additional charge.

Kearsney Abbey

Wednesday 5th August Meet at 11am (meeting place to be confirmed) Alkham Valley Road, Dover, Kent, CT16 3DZ Suitable for all ages and abilities (Most paths suitable for wheelchair users) FREE for everyone SNAAP would like you to join us for a games day and picnic in the park. Kearsney offers a wide open space of parkland around two ornamental lakes. The remains of the abbey are now used as a café facility. A play area for children is available and the lower lake is used for model boating.

Diggerland

Thursday 6th August 10.30am at the entrance

A fun filled action packed day for kids and adults of all ages and abilities. You have the opportunity to ride in and drive different types of construction machinery including Dumper Trucks, Mini Diggers and Giant Diggers and opportunities to learn about the workings of the machines from the fully trained Instructors. There are seatbelts on 90% of the rides and these must be worn and a few height & age restrictions.

Inclusive Youth Club Thursday 6th August 6.30 - 8.30pm

Riverside Youth Centre, Kingsmead Road, Canterbury CT2 7PH (behind Kingsmead leisure Centre) Age 11+ and all abilities Entrance FREE This is our mainstream club open to young people with disabilities and special needs. There is a buddy system in place to encourage independence for SNAAP young people. Activities include computers, outdoor play, games and pool. Parents are not expected to stay with their child/ren. No need to book, just turn up.

Whitstable Youth Session Friday 7th August 10.30am – 2pm

Whitstable Youth and Community Centre, Tower Parade, Whitstable CT5 2BJ Age 11+, all abilities welcome Cost £4 A fun packed session including clay modelling, nails and makeup, making peppermint creams and Dino Discovery! If your child has additional care needs please contact us to discuss. Limited spaces.

Sports Club

Friday 7th August 4 – 6pm

Body and Mind, Canterbury High School, Knights Avenue, Canterbury CT2 8QA Age 8+, all abilities welcome Children £1.50 Come along and burn off some energy at our SNAAP sports club. Offers trampolining, New Age Kurling, Football with coach from Canterbury City FC, ball games and much more. Parents/carers are not required to stay with their child. (There is a café on site if you wish to use it). No need to book, just turn up.

Whitstable Youth Session Monday 10th August 10.30am – 2pm

Whitstable Youth and Community Centre, Tower Parade, Whitstable CT5 2BJ Age 11+, all abilities welcome Cost £4 New and fun activities including Remote controlled cars, making keyrings and creating your own pizza! If you child has additional care needs please contact us to discuss this further. Limited spaces.

Adventure Play and Gym Tuesday 11th August Session 10am – 12Noon

Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Centre, Whitstable Road, Faversham ME13 8BF Suitable for ages 0-11 years all abilities welcome All children £5 Both sections will be open at this session. One side is a large adventure play area full of slides, tubes, steps, ropes and balls and the other is a gym hall with pitted trampolines, bouncy castle, boat swing & inflatable slide. Available to all children age 11 and under, with a separate area for the under 4s. A cafe is provided so that parents can relax while the children burn off some energy! Limited places.

Canterbury Cathedral and Picnic

The day is yours to wander around and we will meet for lunch in the grounds. Most of the cathedral is accessible. The trinity chapel is not accessible but there are new touch screen computers allowing visitors to see the chapel. There is a slope into the crypt. There are cobbles in various areas.

Inclusive Youth Club – Circus Workshop Thursday 13th August 6.30 - 8.30pm

Riverside Youth Centre, Kingsmead Road, Canterbury CT2 7PH (behind Kingsmead leisure Centre) Age 11+ and all abilities Entrance FREE A circus workshop to teach young people many skills including plate spinning, juggling and Diablo tricks. Parents are not expected to attend.

Whitstable Youth Session – High School Musical Party Friday 14th August 10.30am – 2pm

Whitstable Youth and Community Centre, Tower Parade, Whitstable CT5 2BJ Age 11+, all abilities welcome Cost £8 Emporium Parties will do sing-a-long and step-by-step choreography of some popular High School Musical songs including ‘All in this together,’ ‘All for one’ and ‘Fabulous’. Also games and prizes! If your child has additional care needs please contact us to discuss this further. Limited spaces.

Summer Diversity Festival – ‘All Different All Equal’ Saturday 15th August 12noon – 6pm

Julie Rose Stadium, Willesborough Road, Kennington, Ashford TN24 9QP Aimed at 11-25 years, all abilities welcome Entrance is FREE Come and join in this celebration of diversity across East Kent. The event is aimed at children aged 11-25 but all family members are welcome. There will be lots to do including a climbing wall, wheelchair basketball, Boccia, Circus skills, dance workshops, accessible bikes, workshops and three stages with various shows and acts performing. They are also showcasing Kent’s Got Talent! No booking necessary, just turn up. SNAAP look forward to seeing you there!

Whitstable Youth Session – Bowling session Monday 17th August 10.30am – 2pm

A bowling session included as part of the Youth Session. All the usual activities will be available with a bowling session being held opposite the club. Parents need to drop their children off at the Youth Centre as usual and staff will safely escort children over to the bowling alley and back. Children will return back to the youth club for lunch. Limited spaces.

Bedgebury National Pinetum & Accessible Archery (optional) Tuesday 18th August 10.30am at the entrance

Bedgebury Pinetum and forest boasts over 10,000 trees and the largest selection of temperate conifers in the world. There is a large car park, tarmac paths and a visitor centre that offers bike hire including a selection of adapted bikes, a café, disabled toilets and seating for picnics. There are several children’s play areas including a pirate ship, giant swing and other wooden sculptures. Accessible archery sessions are available but there are limited spaces. There will be three sessions between 11am and 2pm each lasting one hour. Due to limited numbers the archery is only available for disabled children. All abilities are welcome as specialist equipment is available to enable those with limited mobility to join in the fun! This is an optional extra and if your child does not wish to participate in archery then join us for a day out in this amazing forest.

Westbere Accessible Sailing

Thursday 20th and Friday 21st August Session 10am - 12noon Westbere Sailing Opportunity, Sturry

Offers an opportunity to try sailing regardless of disability. SNAAP have two boats for both sessions. This activity is for all abilities and a hoist is available to lift children with limited mobility into the boat. There are various options with children who can not sit on the bench in the boat which can be discussed further if you have concerns. There are limited numbers and a parent or carer is expected to travel in the boat with their child. If you feel your child is capable to sail in a boat with others without a carer, please contact the office to discuss this.

Whitstable Youth and Community Centre, Tower Parade, Whitstable CT5 2BJ Age 11+, all abilities welcome Cost £4 Activities including bead craft and card making, making cheese straws and ‘Scientific Experiments’! If your child has additional care needs please contact us to discuss this further. Limited spaces.

Sports Club

Friday 21st August 4 – 6pm

Body and Mind, Canterbury High School, Knights Avenue, Canterbury CT2 8QA Age 8+, all abilities welcome Children £1.50 Another chance to try this club. No need to book, just turn up on the day.

Youth Session at Vue Cinema and Frankie & Bennys Monday 24th August 10.30am – 2pm (approx)

Vue cinema and Frankie and Benny’s, Westwood Cross, Thanet Age 11+, all abilities welcome Cost £15 (includes film, meal and drink) An independent cinema & restaurant experience for youths of all abilities. There is excellent access at both the cinema and restaurant. Film details will be sent two weeks before the event but will be one of the blockbuster films being released over the summer. Times are approximate due to film time not being confirmed. You will need to drop your child to Westwood Cross and collect at the end. Limited spaces.

Coach leaves at 8.30am from William Street car park, Herne Bay (journey approx. 2 hrs). There will be three coaches, including one wheelchair accessible coach. SNAAP have arranged fast track passes enabling you to by-pass the queues. There are over 50 interactive rides, live shows, building workshops, driving schools and attractions set in 50 acres of parkland. There are a few things that incur an extra cost but these are optional. Spaces will be allocated on a first come first served basis with priority for Canterbury District families.

SNAAP-EY’s Party

Wednesday 26th August 11am - 1pm Windchimes, Reynolds Close, Herne Bay CT6 6DS Age 0-5, all abilities Free for everyone This party is to celebrate the summer with all members of Riverside and Windchimes SNAAP-EY’s. We are also inviting those who have gone to school and have just finished their reception year. The disabled child must be aged 0-5 years but siblings over this age are welcome. We will have bouncy castles, sensory and water play, sensory and soft play rooms, games and prizes, singing and of course party food!

Toy Library

Thursday 27th August 12 – 2pm Windchimes, Reynolds Close, Herne Bay CT6 6DS Suitable for all ages and abilities Another chance to drop in and borrow toys or bring back ones previously borrowed. Why not pop in, have lunch (order in cafe or bring your own) and have a chat with other parents whilst your children play.

An end of term party and what a way to end it! A disco followed by a sleepover. Children can come to just the disco or to both (dependant on age) If your child does not want to sleep over they can stay until a time you feel is appropriate, please let staff know. There will be ‘midnight feast’, DVDs and popcorn, lots of food, karaoke, party games and prizes! If your child receives a place on the sleepover a separate kit list will be issued. If your child needs additional personal care, please contact us to discuss further. There are limited spaces.
