Bellwork Switch all the subtractions in the following expressions to adding the opposite: Example: 4 – x – 7 + 2 = 4 + (-x) + (-7) + 2 5. 6. 7. 8.
5–y–3= g+4–6= m + 6 – 2m = h – 6h – 9 – 4 + h =
Simplifying Math
NEWSFLASH!!!! Subtraction IS THE SAME AS Adding the Opposite!!!!!!
To make things easier to solve…… ….turn all subtractions in to ADDING THE OPPOSITE
Rewrite any SUBTRACTION as ADDING THE OPPOSITE • • • • •
x – 6 = x + (-6) EASY EXAMPLE ! y – 12 = y + (-12) g – 14 + 13 = g + (-14) + 13 h + 4 – (-3) – 5h = h + 4 + 3 + (-5h) (-5m) – 5 + 4m – 4 – 5 + m – 3m = (5m) + (-5) + 4m + (-4) + (-5) + m + (-3m)
Now simplify them!! Easy!
= g + (-1)
g + (-14) + 13 h + 4 + 3 + (-5h)
= -4h + 7
(5m) + (-5) + 4m + (-4) + (-5) + m + (-3m)
= 7m + (-14)
