Geotechnical aspects of landfill construction and design SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY Geotechnical aspects are essential factors to be considered during design and construction of waste piles. Basic geotechnical aspects relate to slope stability, settlement or permeability, including those of the structural elements such as the stabilizing elements, anchors or sealing layers and drainage blankets. Identifying Opportunities for improvement whilst ensuring waste facilities are compliant with environmental licenses and regulations, as well as workplace health and safety (WH&S) legation. Minimize the environmental footprint of the Region’s landfills through provision of extending operational life span of landfill and improved management of airspace and site operations. Rockhampton Region population is approximately 83,000 and is expected to grow to 94,000 by 2024. With growing population comes increased waste generation and landfill airspace challenges. Just over 69,000 tones were buried at Rockhampton Region’s landfills in 2013/2014 financial year. According to Waste Reduction and Recycling Strategy (RRWR), council will achieve an overall reduction in waste to landfill of 15%.
