The shortest demonstration of Einstein’s mistake Images below are taken from the English translation of his famous article

Page 1 Let us start with:

Page 4 If we call l the light path and t the time interval we can write t=l/c where l is in kilometers or any other unit of length and t is in seconds.

Page 10 Let’s say l is the length of a rigid rod and t the time the light takes to travel from one end to the other of rod. We will have t=l/c for the stationary rod and t’ = l’ / c for the relatively moving rod; the units of measurement being kilometers and seconds. The implied contractions will be l – l’ and t – t’ with the same unit of measurement, to mantain the constancy of the speed of light.

On the same page, Einstein calculates the value for the time contraction giving us:

Page 10 But then Einstein says time contraction is given in seconds per second. This is a mistake. To maintain the constancy of the speed of light, time contraction can only be measured in seconds or any other time unit, never in seconds per second. Implications are enormous. Time contraction in seconds per second will start accumulating in the very first second. When movement stops time contraction stays, it is permanent, absolute. On the contrary, time contraction expressed in seconds will disappear whenever movement stops, as the length contraction does. The following conclusions are erroneous, because they are based on the wrong units of measurement.
