Setting Up Linksys QuickVPN with the WRV54G Question How do I configure the WRV54G and the Linksys QuickVPN client software to create a secure VPN connection?

Answer Please use the following instructions to set up your WRV54G and the QuickVPN client software.

NOTE: Linksys QuickVPN functionality with the WRV54G was added with firmware version 2.36. If you have an earlier version than this, or if you do not see the QuickVPN options in the router pages as seen throughout this article, be sure to upgrade your router to the latest firmware version. Both the v2.36 firmware for the WRV54G and the Linksy QuickVPN Client utility software can be downloaded from: http://www.linksys.com/download/firmware.asp?fwid=18 Accessing the WRV54G’s Setup Page

1. Open a web browser such as Internet Explorer or Netscape. 2. When the browser window opens, go to the Address bar and type in the router's IP Address and click on the Go button (192.168.1.1 is the default IP address of Linksys routers).

3. A window will appear prompting for a “User Name” and a “Password”. Type in the router's username and password and click on the OK button to login (admin is the default username, and admin is the default password). 4. The router's web-based “Setup” utility should then load. Adding QuickVPN User Accounts to the WRV54G Please use the following instructions to add VPN users to the WRV54G:

1. From the “Setup” page, click on the Access Restrictions tab. 2. When the “Access Restrictions” page loads, click on the VPN Client Access sub tab.

3. When the VPN Client Access page loads, the following information will need to be entered for each user accou you wish to create. Up to five (5) VPN user accounts can be added. • Username: Enter the desired user name for the user. E-mail addresses are a good choice, for ease of use. In the example below, linksysuser is used as the username. • Password: This is the user’s login password that will be needed when a connection is made. • Allow user to change password: This option can be enabled if you want the user to manage their own password. If this option is not enabled, the user’s password will have to be changed via the router

interface manually.

4. Add the account (or save any changes to an account) by clicking on the Add/Save button. NOTE: At this point after adding the very first user account, and when the router detects that it is currently configured to the default 192.168.1.0 network, it will automatically attempt to change itself to be on a 10.x.x.0 network instead. The network numbering will be random (a possible network might be 10.252.242.0, for example). This is done to prevent conflicts with remote networks. The router address will be set to 10.x.x.1. You will still be able to access the router’s web-based Setup utility at the default 192.168.1.1 address, since all DNS requests will automatically redirect to the new address. If you previously had static IP addresses configured on the network (e.g., 192.168.1.6, etc.), they will need to be changed to the new network numbering.

5. After creating user accounts, each one should appear in the VPN Client List Table.

6. Once you have finished adding a user and once the account is displayed on the VPN Client List Table list, click on the Save Settings button to save the changes.

7. To check VPN user statuses, you can access the router’s Status tab, and select the VPN Clients sub-tab. Connection start times, end times, durations, and the ability to disconnect users, are all found in this section.

Setting up the Linksys QuickVPN Client Software NOTE: The Linksys QuickVPN Software is compatible with Windows 2000 and Windows XP only.

1. Open the Linksys QuickVPN client program by double clicking on the System Tray icon (

). If you do not see the icon, run the program by going into the Windows Start menu, pointing to the Programs or All Programs option, selecting and opening the Linksys QuickVPN folder, and then clicking on the Linksys VPN Client. Th System Tray icon should then appear, and you will be able to double-click and open it.

2. When the “Linksys VPN Client” window appears, enter the following information:

• Profile Name: Enter a name for the VPN connection that you are configuring. For example, if you connect to two different office VPNs, you can create two different profiles named “Office-1” and “Office 2” respectively. In the example below, Linksys is used as the profile name.

• User Name: The user name assigned that will allow access to the VPN must be entered here. It is the same user name for the account configured in the WRV54G “VPN Client Access” tab (instructions in th section above). In the example below, linksysuser is used as the user name.

• Password: The password that matches the “User Name” must be entered. It is the same password for the user account configured in the WRV54G “VPN Client Access” tab (instructions in the section above). The password will not be saved - you will need to enter a password every time a connection i

made to prevent unauthorized access. • Server Address: The Internet IP address assigned to the WRV54G router must be specified here. If there is a fully-qualified domain name that exists for the location (like a DDNS domain name, for example), you can enter in an address instead (e.g., mylinksysrouter.com).

3. After adding in the access information, click on the Save button. A prompt will appear confirming that the Profi

was saved successfully. Click the OK option to accept. This will associate the settings entered (User Name an Server Address) to the Profile Name that was specified. You can create multiple profiles, all with different settings.

4. You can now click on the Connect button, and a secure VPN connection to the WRV54G at the address specified will be attempted.

5. If a connection is made, a status window will appear with a summary of the connection details.

The QuickVPN System Tray icon should also turn green to indicate a successful connection: This icon can also be right-clicked at any time during a session to perform various operations.
