TEST NOTES ** Windows Media Player will be herein referred to as 'WMP' ** Identified different ways in which 'Play' feature can be invoked as follows: 1. Windows Taskbar > Double-Click on WMP icon 2. Start > Programs > WMP > Play icon 3. Open WMP > Minimize WMP > Play icon 4. Open WMP > Play icon 5. Open WMP > Play Menu > Play/Pause menu item 6. Double-click an Audio/Video file from WMP UI 7. Right-click on an Audio/Video file from WMP UI and select Play option 8. Double-click on any Audio/Video file from newly created playlist 9. Right-click on any Audio/Video file from newly created playlist and select Play option 10. Double-click on the Playlist which contains many songs

11. Right-click on the Playlist and select Play option 12. Quick Launch toolbar > WPM > Play icon 13. Open WMP > Play Menu > Ctrl+P 14. Double-click on any Audio/Video file from Hard Disk 15. Right-click on any Audio/Video file from Hard Disk 16. Double-click on any Audio/Video file from Network Drive/UNC 17. Right-click on any Audio/Video file from Network Drive/UNC 18. Double-click on any Audio/Video file from CD/DVD/USB drives 19. Right-click on any Audio/Video file from CD/DVD/USB drives 20. Right-click any audio/video folder > Play with Media Player option 21. Single-click on any audio/video file should play the file (If Single Click to select an item is enabled) 22. Select any audio/video file and hit on Enter Key 23. Select multiple audio/video files and hit on Enter Key

OPPORTUNITY Identified areas where playing audio/video files in different formats can result in bugs

BUGS #BUG 1 Play: Clicking on Play button for a second time does not update the seconds field for the audio file Repro: 1. Select an MP3 audio file and play the file in WMP 2. Click on Play icon to play the file. Click on this icon again to pause the file. Click on Play for second time. 3. Observe the seconds field that displays the time elapsed while playing the file

Actual Result: Seconds field does not get updated Expected Result: Seconds field should get updated irrespective of the number of times Play icon is clicked Risk: Medium. Incorrect Time is displayed if the user clicks on Play icon multiple times which is misleading to the user

#BUG 2 Play: Playing a AVI file displays an error 'An XVID codec is required to play this file...', but the audio is played Repro: 1. Select an avi file and play the file in WMP 2. An error is displayed as 'An XVID codec is required to play this file...' 3. Audio is being played though an error message is displayed Actual Result: Audio is being played for an avi file though an error message is displayed Expected Result: Audio should not be played as there is a XVID codec requirement to play the avi file Risk: High. AVI files are not rendered correctly on WPM as it does not contain a XVID codec by default. Playing just the audio is misleading to the user

#BUG 3 Play: Inconsistent error reporting while playing a video file(*.3gp) from Nokia 6300 cell phone Repro: 1. Select a 3gp file and play the file in WMP 2. A message is displayed as 'the selected file has an extension that is not recognized by Windows Media Player, but the player may still be able to play it....Do you want the player to try to play the file' 3. If the user clicks on 'Yes', another error message is displayed that it cannot be played. Actual Result: The failure message is displayed after the user is tricked to believe that the file can be played. Expected Result: The failure message should be displayed in the first instance itself

Risk: High. The user is first tricked that the file can be played, but the next error message disappoints the user

#BUG 4 Play: Incorrect icon present on error message dialog of WPM Repro: 1. Select a 3gp file and play the file in WMP 2. A message is displayed as 'the selected file has an extension that is not recognized by Windows Media Player, but the player may still be able to play it....Do you want the player to try to play the file' 3. If the user clicks on 'Yes', another error message is displayed that it cannot be played. 4. Observe the icon on this error message dialog Actual Result: Information icon is displayed Expected Result: Error icon should be displayed Risk: Low. User Confusion

#BUG 5 Play: Dragging and Dropping an PNG image file in the WMP tries to play the file Repro: 1. Drag and drop a PNG image file in the WMP 2. Observe the status Actual Result: The status is displayed as 'Playing' Expected Result: An error message should be displayed that a PNG Image file cannot be played (Ideally, drag and drop should not succeed) Risk: Medium. User is tricked yet again to believe that it will be played.

#BUG 6 Play: Dragging and Dropping an PNG image file in the WMP hangs the slider Repro: 1. Drag and drop a PNG image file in the WMP 2. Observe the slider by dragging or moving it Actual Result: The slider hangs Expected Result: Slider should not hang. An error message should be displayed that a PNG Image file cannot be played (Ideally, drag and drop should not succeed) Risk: Medium.

#BUG 7 Play: Dragging and Dropping an PNG image file in the WMP displays the play time as 9 seconds Repro: 1. Drag and drop a PNG image file in the WMP 2. Observe the time for which this file is played Actual Result: The file is played for 9 seconds Expected Result: The file should not be played and the time should not be displayed. An error message should be displayed that a PNG Image file cannot be played (Ideally, drag and drop should not succeed) Risk: Medium. User is tricked yet again to believe that it will be played.

ISSUES #ISSUE 1 What are the different file formats that are officially supported and not supported with Windows Media Player?
