Selection Meaning and Steps

Selection • The selection procedure is the system of functions and devices adopted in a given company to ascertain whether the candidates specifications are matched with a job specifications and requirement or not • Selection is the process of choosing the appropriate candidate from applicants whose skills match the requirements of the job.

Selection • Selection is the process of choosing from a group of applicants the individual best suited for a particular position and organisation • Properly matching people with jobs and the organisation is the goal of the selection process

Objectives of Selection • To predict which job applicants would be successful if hired • To inform and sell the candidate on the job and the organisation

Conditions for selection • Selection procedures are not effective until the following conditions are met – Requirements of the job to be filled have been clearly specified – Employee specification (physical, mental, social, behavioural, etc) have been clearly specified – Candidates for screening have been attracted

Evaluation of Application Forms • Evaluation of Application Forms is also called as Application Blank • This technique secures information from the prospective candidates • It is used as a device to screen the candidates at the preliminary level • Generally, personal background information, educational attainments, work experiences, salary, personal details and references are included in the application form

Preliminary Review • Selection Process often begins with Preliminary Review • Basic purpose of this review is to eliminate the applicants who obviously do not mee the job requirements • This may be done by – telephone interviews or – videotaped interviews or – virtual job interviews

Administration of Selection Tests • Job seekers who pass the screening and preliminary review are called for selection tests • Generally, tests are used to determine the applicant’s ability, aptitude and personality • Depending on the job and the organisation different types of tests may be administered

The Employment Interview • The employment interview is important because the applicants who reach this stage are the survivor of the previous stages of selection • The employment interview is a goaloriented conversation in which the interviewer and applicant supposedly exchange information • Interviews are the primary method companies use to evaluate applicants

Reference and Background Check • Validations that provide additional insight into the information furnished by the applicant • Reference check allows verification of the information’s accuracy

Selection Decision • Obtains and Evaluates information about the finalists • Candidate is chosen to offer the job who passes through the all other selection process

Medical Examination • Many organisations conduct preemployment medical examination of the candidates • Once the candidate fits in this criteria he is offered a job
