■ North Stradbroke Tour
An Invitation Dear Colleagues, On behalf of The University of Queensland’s Sustainable Minerals Institute, The AusIMM and the Cooperative Research Centre for Sustainable Resource Processing, I have much pleasure in inviting you to participate in the 2009 SDIMI Conference on Queensland’s Gold Coast in July. This is the first time that this conference has been held outside of Europe and presents a unique opportunity for Australian and international researchers and industry practitioners to engage in dialogue about the future of the minerals industry and its contribution to society. The conference comes at a critical point in the history of the industry, with the confluence of tighter controls on carbon emissions, increased competition for key resources such as water and land, rising community expectations and a prolonged global economic downturn presenting unprecedented challenges for the sector. The conference will focus on the application and integration of sustainable development principles across all aspects of the minerals industry. It will have a strong multi-disciplinary focus and will encompass the social and human, as well as the environmental and technological, dimensions of sustainability. Response to the call for papers has been very good and we have secured some impressive keynote speakers, including Dr Tony Hodge, the new President of the International Council on Mining and Metals.
Thursday 9 July 2009 The Tour: Consolidated Rutile Limited (CRL) is a successful Australian resources company with a key role on the world minerals stage. CRL’s operations are based in Brisbane, Queensland, and on the adjacent Moreton Bay’s North Stradbroke Island. CRL has undertaken groundbreaking research and is renowned internationally for progressively rehabilitating native vegetation and ecosystems on North Stradbroke Island’s high dunes. In addition, CRL supports/ sponsors numerous world class conservation programs for significant flora and fauna species. On this tour of CRL’s North Stradbroke Island operations you will; • Visit one of the largest open cut, wet dredge mines in Australia. The last east coast sand mine that has been in operation for over 40 years • Tour revegetation site of various age classes and techniques and hear from CRL personnel how they developed closure criteria for the mine • Visit their nursery facilities and rehabilitation works (time permitting) • Visit some of the other local sites such as the Terra Bulla Leumea Aboriginal mission site, the Gorge Walk at Point Lookout (time permitting) Attendees must bring: Sunscreen, hat, sunglasses. CRL requires that you wear fully enclosed shoes (preferably steel capped), long pants and long sleeve shirt. Please note we will be walking over sand dunes and inspecting regeneration sites. Minimum: 35 people must register for this tour to proceed. Maximum: 50 people Cost: A$124.00 per person (incl. GST), includes transfers to and from Sofitel Hotel Gold Coast and North Stradbroke Island, 3 hour CRL tour, lunch and refreshments. Parts of the tour will be subject to weather conditions.
The AusIMM Awards Dinner Sunday 5 July 2009 The AusIMM Annual Dinner and Awards Presentation will take place at the Sofitel Gold Coast on Sunday 5 July at 7.00 pm for 7.30 pm. This gala event provides an excellent lead-in to the SDIMI Conference. The Awards recognise the diverse contributions of professionals in the minerals sector that have contributed to outstanding economic, environmental and social outcomes across a range of areas such as indigenous employment, safety management and transparent financial reporting. Please join us in honouring individuals who have shown commitment in advancing industry best practice and demonstrated leadership on issues of national and international significance. Details and citations for Award recipients can be viewed at: http://www.ausimm.com.au/content/default.aspx?ID=258 Bookings can be made online at www.ausimm.com.au/sdimi2009, or please contact: Pauline Weaver, The AusIMM Email:
