Hands on SAP technical or functional training is crucial in developing the SAP skills and knowledge needed to compete in the current employment market. How did you first get involved in SAP? I was living in the UK when I was offered a contract to work for Dow Chemical in their office in the South of France. They were looking for an operations analyst to help look after an SAP system they had inherited when they bought a company called Naskov. Their SAP instance was running on CICS and VSAM! How long have you been working with SAP? 18 years. The first 6 were spent working on the older SAP R2 mainframe version, the last 12 working on the current R3 SAP versions. Have you always worked in SAP Security? Yes but not 100% of the time. I started working for a small SAP consultancy based out of North Carolina in 1997. Being a small shop we were called upon to work in more than one area. Basis, or Net weaver as it’s now called and security go hand in hand, so after installing or upgrading the R3 systems and training the Basis team I then helped design and build the security. How long have you been teaching SAP? In a limited capacity since 1992. However as time has gone by teaching has become an increasingly significant aspect of my career. Why do you like teaching? I like to think I am a people person and I enjoy helping people. So if I can do that and help people move up in their career, then it’s a win-win for me. What do you think makes a good instructor? I think you have to enjoy working with people of varying experience and be able to simplify and explain complex problems or concepts in several different ways that can be easily understood.

How many people have you taught? That’s a difficult question and I don’t have stats from all the positions I have held over the years but I would guess in the high 100’s. Do you prefer one on one classes or groups? I enjoy both equally. How has your teaching style changed over the years? Good question. It has always been easy going and laid back. I have found that if you are relaxed and confident in your knowledge and approach it really helps the students. How have you taught? Initially, training was done “on the job” working with the permanent members of staff. Over the years that grew to encompass formal classes with varying numbers of students.

Introduction to Business Intelligence/Business Warehouse
You’ve asked for it. Now we’ve got it. The Introduction to Business Intelligence/Business Warehouse is finally here. Be part of our inaugural class as it begins on Tuesday, November 18th at 8:00 PM (EST). SAP Project Management
Perhaps you’ve got your PMP certification, have experience managing IT or other projects, or just have a desire to learn what it takes to manage an SAP implementation project from start to finish, we’ve got just the course for you. Our SAPPM101 course will prepare you to manage an SAP project from start to finish. It will cover a variety of topics and specifically related to SAP projects including the following: •
Project preparation
Which teaching method do you prefer? I think the Webex approach as utilized by SAPTraining.com is superb! It’s flexible, cost effective and the students love it.
•
Sizing and Blueprinting
•
SAP Functional Development
•
Final preparation
Do you still work in the Net weaver and security areas? No. I decided to drop Basis and specialize in SAP security 6 years ago.
•
Go Live/Cutover
Did you prefer working as a consultant or a permanent employee? Good question. As a consultant you have the opportunity to work at many varied installations and experience different operating systems, SAP versions, SAP upgrades and installations. However once the job is done you are off to the next, so you miss out on the opportunity to grow with a company. It comes down to personal preference.

Give an example of some of the problems you deal with. This is a good one! If any functional person has an issue he can’t fix, then by default “It has to be a Net weaver or Security issue.” It’s the catch all response. Of course this is not always the case but you are sometimes called on to prove it’s not security. In one problem, we encountered two users with the same access getting different results. The problem turned out to be the decimal notation on their SAP accounts. One had 1.234.567.89 and the other 1,234,567.89. If you don’t specify when you define the user account then 1.234.567.89 is the default, this was causing the problem since some arithmetic calculations need 1,234,567.89. What tips would you give students? Practice, practice and practice! You have 7 x 24 access to the systems; use it as much as you can, and if you have any questions ask them. That’s what we are here for!!
