Return Trip from the U.S. to S.Asia Programme Implemented by Dr. Riffat Hassan, on behall the U. S. Department of State, for

UNIVERSITY of LOUISVILLE - Dare to be great Department, it was stated, “You can be very proud of “RELIGION AND SOCIETY: A what you have accomplished, every Department of State DIALOGUE” exchange project that brings Muslim and non-Muslim EXECUTIVE SUMMARY In December 2005, the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, U.S. Department of State, announced a Request for Grant Proposals (RFGP) entitled “Religion and Society : A Dialogue.” In response to this RFGP, the University of Louisville proposing a multi-phased exchange to engage influential religious scholars, teachers, preachers, and community leaders from Bangladesh, India and Pakistan, in dialogue with their American counterparts and a variety of academic, interfaith, and community-based groups in the U.S. Dr. Riffat Hassan, Professor of Humanities and Islamic Studies at the University of Louisville, was the Director of the Program. The objectives of “Religion and Society : A Dialogue,” as stated in the RFGP were “i) to enhance the non-American participants’ understanding of the place of religion and serious religious study, particularly Islam, in American life; 2) to provide a forum for examination and discussion of the compatibility of religious practice and democratic social and political values and structures, the benefits produced by coexistence among religious communities, and the practice of Islam in a multi-cultural, multi-religious context; and 3) to broaden the understanding of American scholars, clerics, and laypersons of the place of Islam in non-American societies.” Our proposal endeavored to meet the above-stated objectives through activities that include “both theoretical orientation and experiential, country-based initiatives.” There is obvious similarity between the RFGP entitled “Religion and Society : A Dialogue” and the RFGP entitled “Islamic Life in the U.S.” which had been announced by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, U.S. Department of State in Summer 2002. The College of Arts and Sciences, University of Louisville, sent a proposal in response to the latter and won an award of $343,785. It was the only institution in the U.S. to get this grant. In 2004, the Department of State gave the University of Louisville an additional $157,000. Once again, the University of Louisville was the only institution to get supplemental funds from the State Department for an ongoing project. The four exchanges conducted under the “Islamic Life in the U.S.” Program - two bringing S. Asian Muslim religious scholars, teachers and preachers to the U.S, and two taking their U.S. counterparts to S. Asia, were regarded as extremely successful both by the participants and the State Department. In an e-mail sent to Dr. Hassan on December 15, 2005, by Dr. Thomas Johnston, Senior Exchange Specialist at the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs at the State

clerics, scholars and community activists together from this point forward will be inspired by and modeled on the South Asia program that you designed and implemented.” The proposal that was submitted for the “Religion and Society : A Dialogue” aimed to build on the foundations laid by the “Islamic Life in the U.S” program. It included two visits of S. Asian Muslim religious scholars, preachers and community leaders to the U.S., and two return visits by their American counterparts. Some alumni of the previous program from Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, and the U.S. would be included amongst the participants in each of the four exchanges. The inclusion of alumni will ensure the continuity and sustainability of the bridge-building and peace-building process that started with the “Islamic Life in the U.S.” Program . The activities undertaken in the “Religion and Society ; A Dialogue” Program aims to take the dialogic process to a higher level where concrete collaborative projects begin to materialize. It also seeks to widen the circle of those who can become a part of the evolving, deepening dialogue through multi-media projection of important interactions. In September 2006, the U.S. Department of State awarded $535,000 to the University of Louisville for the “Religion and Society : A Dialogue” Program. The fact that the Department of State awarded a second substantial grant to the University of Louisville for an Exchange Program focusing on

S. Asian Muslims indicates the importance of this region in the ongoing struggle against extremism and violence through the development of a culture which is knowledge-based and justice-and-peace-oriented. In the first Exchange of the “Religion and Society : A Dialogue” Program (October 27 November 17, 2007), fourteen participants from Bangladesh, India and Pakistan visited the U.S. The names of the participants and the country to which they belonged, are given below: Bangladesh: Professor Dr. Aminul Islam, Professor Dr. Azizun Nahar Islam, Professor Dr. Najma Begum, Professor Dr. Kawthar Mustafa Abululayee, and Professor Dr. Munir Ahmad; India: Dr. Syed Zafar Mahmood, A. R. Shaheen, Professor Ali Mohammad Naqvi, Professor Farrukh Saiyyeda Waris, and Dr. Aslam Parvaiz; Pakistan: Moiz Amjad. Sardar Iqbal Muhammad Khilji, Dr. Arfa Seysa Zehra, and Professor Dr. Saad Malik. During their visit to the U.S., the S. Asian participants engaged in academic, community-based, and interfaith activities in Louisville, Gethsemane, Philadelphia, New York and Washington D.C. These activities gave them an opportunity for interaction and dialogue with diverse civil society and religious groups. Of central importance amongst these activities were Forums in three parts. Part I consisted of a discussion on the “theoretical” or “normative” aspects of intra-religious and inter-religious dialogue between Muslims and people of other religions. In Part II, the discussion was on the experiential and historical aspects of such dialogue. In Part III, there was a focused discussion on collaborative programs/projects that could be undertaken by the S. Asian participants and their American partners to strengthen and advance the process of peacebuilding .......Contninued to page 4

Religion and Society: A Dialogue.........Continued From page 1 through concrete actions. Such actions couldinclude the production of books or a manual, audio-visual presentations, and internet-based educational materials, which could be utilized widely for building bridges in a polarized world especially between the Muslim world and the U.S. The return trip of the U.S. participants to India and Bangladesh is scheduled to take place from January 2-16, 2008. During this Exchange Program, the participants would take part in The Delhi Consultation of South Asian Scholars and Activists on Peace Building is Islam and Other Religions (January 5-6, 2008), visit the historic Aligarh Muslim University in Aligarh, and then travel to Dhaka and Chittagong in Bangladesh where they would interact with a number of alumni and others at Dhaka University and Chittagong University MESSAGE FROM DR. RIFFAT HASSAN As Director of “Religion and Society : A Dialogue” Program, it is my special privilege and pleasure to take five distinguished American scholars, preachers, and community activists to South Asia on a Return Trip that marks the second exchange visit of the Program. The U.S. participants visiting S. Asia (January 2-16, 2008) are: Professor Dr. Leonard Swidler (Temple University, Philadelphia), Rabbi Dr. Daniel Polish (New York), Dr. Aslam Abdullah (Las Vegas, Nevada), Professor Dr. Ingrid Shafer (Oklahoma City) and Ellyn Crutcher (Louisvill, Kentucky). Joining them will be Dr. Syed Zafar Mahmood and Sardar Muhammad Iqbal Khilji, alumni from India and Pakistan respectively. They will also be joined by Moiz Amjad, alumnus from Pakistan, at the Delhi Consultation. It is a great honor for the University of Louisville to be the sole recipient of a second prestigious grant from the U.S. Department of State. The first grant had enabled us to initiate the “Islamic Life in the U.S. “ Program (2003 - 2007) , a pilot project focusing on Afghanistan, Bangladesh, India and Pakistan, that is considered to be a model project by the U.S. Department of State. The second grant which has made it possible to implement a follow- up Program entitled “Religion and Society: A Dialogue” which focuses on Bangladesh, India and Pakistan. The first exchange of this Program which brought 14 S. Asian Muslim participants to the U.S. (October 27 - November 17, 2007) is being followed by the first Return Visit by U.S. scholars, preachers and community activists (January 2-16, 2008). During this exchange, the U. S. participants will visit Delhi and Aligarh in India, and Dhaka and Chittagong in Bangladesh. Unfortunately, due to the politically unstable and volatile situation currently prevailing in Pakistan, the U.S. group will not be able to visit Pakistan on this trip As this historic Program continues, it is important to remember that we have started on a long and arduous mission. The task ahead of us is not an easy one - to promote a culture of knowledge and to build bridges of understanding in a highly polarized world in which negative stereotypes of images of both sides abound. It is my expectation that this group of American scholars will engage, both individually and collectively, in constructive dialogue with the persons and groups with whom they will be interacting in various cities and settings, and endeavor to develop concrete, collaborative projects that will sustain and strengthen the peace-building process which began with the earlier Program. I want to express my deepest thanks to all our partners - local, national and international - who have contributed so much toward making our Program so meaningful and significant. Together we have created a model of networking and bridge-building amongst diverse peoples that can be emulated anywhere. Let us go forward and find new ways to widen our circle and to deepen its roots in the hearts, minds and spirits of those who have become a part of this memorable mission. Riff at Hassan Professor of Humanities and Religious Studies, Director of “Religion and Society : A Dialogue” Program, University of Louisville. Louisville, Kentucky. U. S. A.
