Producing

Producing a play will really allow you to get to grips with how ruds and RUSU operate and develop many key skills employers look for. As producer you’ll be the one keeping calm as it looks as though everything is heading for disaster and keeping the production on track. You’re the enterprising Alan Sugar to the director’s frothy Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen. Here are qualities we look for in a producer; o o o o

organised resourceful communicative and a bit of a polymath

As with any role in ruds, you don’t need any previous experience to produce a show, just enthusiasm and passion.

As a producer you’re roles are the following (undertaken in roughly this order) 1. Obtaining the production rights for performance. 2. Locating and hiring performance space. 3. With ruds Finance Officer, preparing a budget and audience projections 4. Raising additional funds not allocated from the ruds account. 5. Arrange and attend auditions to select cast along with the director. 6. With the ruds Artistic and Technical Consultant, putting together a creative team as per the requirements of the production (chorographer, set, lighting, sound, costume, musical director).

ruds 7. Put together a production schedule with a weekly breakdown of tasks to be started and completed. 8. Arranging the building and sourcing of set, props and costume, along with collecting receipts and pay-outs with ruds Finance Officer. 9. In the case of musical productions, assit the musical director in putting together a band and conductor. 10. With the ruds Marketing Officer, arranging the advertising and publicity of the production, creation of artwork and logos. 11. Arranging RUSU box office and setting up online ticket sales. 12. Arrage for the printing of flyers and posters. 13. Booking rooms for rehearsals and arranging technical and dress rehearsals. 14. Maintaining close contact with the creative team during all stages of the production in relation to artistic presentation to ensure all elements in co-ordination and everything ready for opening. 15. Collating information and blurbs for the programme and arranging printing. 16. Opening night arrangements including the printing and issue of invitations, and subsequent hospitality, to press and dignitaries and the selling of programmes. 17. Monitoring the performances. 18. Arranging with the technical crew for get-in and eventually get-out. 19. Arranging the return, storage or disposals of sets and costumes. 20. With the ruds Social Secretary arranging the closing party and “RADA” awards. 21. Winding down the production. Settling final invoices, royalties with ruds Finance Officer 22. Generally sorting out unforeseen problems.
