It’s time for Indiana to get serious about math achievement By Dr. Tony Bennett, State Superintendent of Public Instruction FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Friday, June 26, 2009 ()
Dr. Tony Bennett, State Superintendent of Indiana Public Instruction, wrote ‘It is time for Indiana to get serious about math achievement. Our students and our state are counting on it.’. America’s 15-year-olds rank 25th among the 30 developed nations in math skills on an international assessment; even our top students rank only 24th. The knowledge gap doesn’t end at the classroom door: 78 percent of adults cannot explain how to compute the interest paid on a loan; 58 percent cannot even figure a 10 percent tip for a restaurant bill.
For our part, we at the Indiana Department of Education are aligning our resources in support of improved math achievement, and this will remain a top priority for us moving forward. We have already addressed many of the decades-old rules that constrict innovative practices and impede progress, and we will bring that same sense of urgency and boldness to bear as we roll out a roadmap for raising math achievement in this state. Within weeks, we will begin unveiling elements of our math strategy, as we take a hard look at every aspect of math learning in this state
