Presentation and Communication Skills 2017 RESUME/CV/COVER LETTER The average employer spends only 10 seconds looking at a resume. Yet it is the only contact you have with the potential employer. Most employers are actually looking for a reason NOT to interview you. There is no room for anything but a flawless, compelling document that reflects who you are and what you've accomplished in the most beneficial light. In this increasingly competitive job market, your resume is your first opportunity to stand out among the hundreds of job seekers applying for the same position as you. The purpose of your resume is to make a good first impression and ensure that you procure an interview. So how can you ensure that your resume shows you in the best light? That is what this class is all about. To start with let us examine the words “resume”, “CV” and “biodata”. These words are frequently used interchangeably; but they mean slightly different things. RESUME Resume is a French word meaning "summary". A resume is ideally a summary of one's education, skills and employment which is submitted when applying for a new job. A resume does not list out all details of a profile, but only some specific skills customized to the target job profile. Therefore it is usually not more than two pages long. C.V. - CURRICULUM VITAE Curriculum Vitae is a Latin word meaning "course of life". It is more detailed than a resume, generally 2 to 3 pages, or even longer as per the requirement. A C.V. lists out every skill, all the jobs and positions held, degrees, professional affiliations the applicant has acquired, and in chronological order. A C.V. is used to highlight the general talent of the candidate rather than specific skills for a specific position. It is often used by people applying for academic positions. BIO DATA Bio Data is the short form for Biographical Data. In a bio data, the focus is on personal particulars like date of birth, gender, religion, race, nationality, residence, marital status, and the like. A chronological listing of education and experience comes after that. A bio data is generally used when applying for defence jobs, government jobs or research grants.

Content: 1. Heading and Contact details: The heading of your resume is not the word “resume” it is your name. Make sure your name stands out (use a different font size). Choose appropriate/professional email address like [email protected]. Don’t give addresses like [email protected]. 2. Objective: Don’t write an over-the-top objective. Make it simple. Write the position you are interested in, the skills you have, the experience you can bring to it, and the environment in which you wish to work. (Don’t bluff. Lie at your own risk! ) use phrases like “I would like an acknowledgement of my skills” If you cannot think of something dynamic then don’t write an objective at all. Eg. 1 - To obtain a position as an engineer or related position which offers key participation, team oriented tasks, immediate challenges, and career opportunity. Eg. 2 - Seeking the position of IT administrator, at the XYZ

Presentation and Communication Skills 2017 Corporation where I can utilize my excellent skills in network security and knowledge of operating systems to improve the operational efficiency. 3. Education: Write in reverse chronological order. Include all the details (qualification, institution’s full name, location and affiliation. Your year of passing and marks obtained). It is advisable to not mention low score/percentage. Here, you can also include core subjects, units or highest marks. Always mention the location of your institution. Example: Education •

Graduation: B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering VJTI, Matunga, Mumbai-19 (2013) CPI: 8.58 (Sem. VI)

Ideally, start each of these bullet statements with an action word. Eg. Developed, analysed, executed, invented. Highlighting is the most important aspect here. This needs to be done through formatting and wording. Example:

Think of your work experience as a series of achievements rather than duties or responsibilities. You can do this by providing concrete details, expressing actions in terms of outcomes, providing quantities, and giving a sense of the work place. A good strategy is to think of your accomplishments in terms of : ACTION/HOW + PURPOSE/WHAT + RESULT/WHY Action/How – start each bullet point with an action verb (i.e. developed, created, produced, executed) Purpose/What – what was the purpose of your action, your responsibility, your assignment, project, etc.? Result/Why – what was the result of your action, what did you accomplish? Examples: Developed (action/how) an after school program for elementary school children focused on reading comprehension skills (purpose/what) which resulted in the participation of 20 students (results/why) Created and compiled investment portfolio worth $50 - $2M dollars for clients and senior financial advisors Scheduled, advertised, and hosted professional development workshops for approximately 200 students to prepare them to interview for various internship opportunities Assessed customer needs to match with appropriate products and services Serviced customers with product recovery techniques to satisfy customer needs 

7. Technical Skills/relevant skills: These are meant to describe other miscellaneous facts that relate to your career objective. These have to be specific skills like languages known or technical knowledge of some sort. The can also be skills like “good negotiator” or “experienced in mergers and acquisitions”. Avoid vague phrases like “hardworking or team player”.

Presentation and Communication Skills 2017 8. Inter/ intra college activities / Positions of responsibility: Here you can mention the role that you have played in college events or festivals. Example: Event head, throwball, Enthusia 

9. Extracurricular activities: If you pursue sports or any artistic activity and have performed at a competitive level, this is where you mention it. 10. Other activities: The only section to know you as a ‘person’. Hence, it is important to highlight things that throw light on your behavior, social skills and overall development of your personality. Be as specific as possible. 11. Personal data: Give only most relevant data; information such as religion, marital status, nationality, etc. are not always required. Print on only one side of the paper.

Balance text and white space. There should be a margin space on either side of the page. At the same time, large spaces should not be left in between the points or sections.

Make your resume look consistent throughout its design.

All section headings should stand out (bold, larger font, underlined, etc.). This makes our resume easy to navigate.

Maintain consistency: headings, font, bullets, margins, spacing, etc. must be consistent.

Use font size and bullets that look professional.

Words play an important role everywhere: use creative and convincing words. Use action verbs.

It is not necessary to use full sentences on your resume.

Try to give most recent information under all headings.

Don’t use abbreviations. Sometimes the employer might not know the names of certain organizations or clubs. Also the employer may not know the name of college festivals that you are mentioning. So give a line of explanation.

There is no prescribed set of categories, order of information, or rigid framework into which your background must fit. Do not copy another’s format. Make your resume a reflection of your individual self.
