Impact of MTAP-DEPED Saturday Mathematics Program in the Academic Achievement of Selected Grade Four Pupils of Bagong Pook Elementary School for the School Year 2016 – 2017

ABSTRACT Department of Education made a class program for Mathematics subject (MTAPDEPED Saturday Mathematics Program) so that the 21st century learners’ may acquire additional knowledge and improve their talents and skills as well as their grades. Bagong Pook Elementary School embraced MTAP-DEPED Saturday Mathematics Program that helps student acquire knowledge in Mathematics subject and improve their grades. This study aims to determine whether the pupils who involved/joined the Mathematics class program improve their grade and skills and to know the impact of learning to the students who involved/joined the Mathematics class program. Different statistical treatment was used such as getting the mean and its mean percentage score and the likert scale to compare the First Grading achievement of the pupils to the Second Grading Achievement of pupils in Mathematics subject. It

measures the difference of the scores before and after the implementation of the MTAPDEPED Saturday Mathematics Program. The results of the study implies a high impact of MTAP-DEPED Saturday Mathematics Program in their academic performance with forty-seven (47) out of fiftyseven (57) selected Grade 4 pupils (82%). Nine (9) of them (16%) had a very high impact while one (1) of the selected Grade 4 pupils (2%) had moderate impact of Saturday Mathematics Program in academic performance. It also shows in figure 3 that there are no selected Grade 4 pupils had a low and very low impact in MTAP-DEPED Saturday Mathematics Program in academic performance. Therefore, the over-all impact of MTAP-DEPED Saturday Mathematics Program in academic performance of selected Grade 4 pupils was high or it can be interpreted as good academic performance. Though it is recommended to continue the MTAP-DEPED Saturday Mathematics Program. This program motivates the pupil’s interest in Mathematics subjects as reflected in their academic achievements.

Impact of MTAP-DEPED Saturday Mathematics Program in the Academic Achievement of Selected Grade Four Pupils of Bagong Pook Elementary School for the School Year 2016 – 2017 I.

CONTEXT Mathematics is one of the elementary subjects that pupils are very hard to

understand and apply in real-life situation. Nowadays, teachers vary their own strategies, methodologies, instructional materials, etc. to make the pupils understand the lesson and content in Mathematics. In 21st century subjects, Department of Education made a class program for Mathematics subject (MTAP class) so that the 21st century learners’ may acquire additional knowledge and improve their talents and skills as well as their grades. MTAP-DEPED Saturday Mathematics Program in every school intends to provide students the opportunity to do mathematics with some open-problem solving without threat of tests. It also gives students an intensive review of the material they covered in the previous year/grade level up to the present school year. Besides, students cope readily with the present and future lessons in Mathematics. MTAP-DEPED Saturday Mathematics Program also aims to prepare Graduating students/pupils for the entrance exams in their next level of studies and prepare them for Math competitions.

RATIONALE The purpose of this studies are a) to determine whether the pupils who involved/joined the Mathematics class program improve their grade and skills. b) to know the impact of learning to the students who involved/joined the Mathematics class program

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Mathematics (from Greek μάθημα máthēma, “knowledge, study, learning”) is the

study

space,

of

topics

such

as quantity (numbers),

structure,

and change. There is a range of views among mathematicians and

philosophers as to the exact scope and definition of mathematics. The Mathematics Teachers Association of the Philippines, Inc. (MTAP), was organized to serve as an appropriate venue where mathematics teachers can come together, interact with one another and share each other's expertise in the pursuit of excellence in mathematics education. The incorporation papers were filed on June 9, 1962 and approved on September 27, 1962.

To ensure a better quality of Mathematics Education, the MTAP aims to:

1. Awaken greater interest in and appreciation of the beauty and value of mathematics among teachers and students, 2. Provide opportunities for the professional growth of teachers, 3. Identify and recognize exemplary teachers,

4. Encourage involvement in the development of Mathematics Education in the Philippines, 5. Identify and motivate mathematically-gifted students, as well as regular students, towards the full development of their potentials, 6. Identify and train resource people who can devote themselves in the teaching of mathematics and do research work on learning and teaching. On the whole MTAP is indeed a potent tool in improving not only the teachers’ professional competencies but students’ performance as well. With the collaboration of many other colleagues from different parts of the country, especially the Division Supervisors who are concerned about the performance of their teachers and students, the MTAP is confident that the country will manage to upgrade the quality of its mathematics education.

RESEARCH QUESTIONS This study aimed to determine the impact of MTAP-DEPED Saturday

Mathematics Program

in the academic achievement of the selected grade four

pupils of Bagong Pook Elementary School for the school year 2016-2017 Specifically, the study focuses to answer the following questions: 1. What is the academic achievement of selected grade four pupils in First Grading Mathematics subject for the school year 2016-2017? 2. What is the academic achievement of selected grade four pupils in Mathematics subject after they attended the MTAP-DEPED Saturday Mathematics Program?

3. Is there any significant effect of MTAP-DEPED Saturday Mathematics Program and the academic achievement of selected grade four pupils of Bagong Pook Elementary School? 4. What action may be proposed to increase the pupil’s academic achievement in Mathematics?

IV.

SCOPE AND LIMITATION This research work dealt with the impact of MTAP-DEPED Saturday Mathematics Program in the academic achievement of selected grade four pupils of Bagong Pook Elementary School of the school year 2016-2017. The study involved sixty (57) pupils who joined in the MTAP-DEPED Saturday Mathematics Program out of 200 grade four enrollees of Bagong Pook Elementary School who joined in the MTAP-DEPED Saturday Mathematics Program for the school year 2016-2017. This research attempt to measure the level of academic achievement of selected grade four pupils using the first quarter and second quarter grades in Mathematics as the assessment tool.

V.

METHODOLOGY This study used the following methods of statistical treatment such as getting the mean and its mean percentage score and the likert scale to compare the First Grading achievement of the pupils to the Second Grading Achievement of pupils in Mathematics subject. It measures the difference of the scores before and after the implementation of the MTAP-DEPED Saturday Mathematics Program.

A. Sampling Respondent of the study are the 57 grade four pupils who attended the MTAP-DEPED Saturday Mathematics Program during the year 2016-2017.

B. Data Collection The study made use of the First Quarter Mathematics grades of the pupils and the Second Quarter grades of the pupils as an instrument in gathering the data.

CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

Based on the results, most of the selected Grade 4 pupils had a high impact of MTAP-DEPED Saturday Mathematics Program in their academic performance with forty-seven (47) out of fifty-seven (57) selected Grade 4 pupils (82%). Therefore, it is recommended to continue the MTAP-DEPED Saturday Mathematics Program in every school. This program motivates the pupil’s interest in Mathematics subjects as reflected in their academic achievements.
