Organize and share your photos.

With Windows Live Photo Gallery and Windows Live Spaces, you can easily organize and share your photos with friends and family—online or from your PC.

Create Cre eate ttags agss The best way to organize your pictures and videos is to add descriptive labels called tags. You can add tags as you transfer them from your camera to your PC (see 10 Exciting Things #2: Transfer your pictures to your PC for details) or at a later time. To tag photos once they are on your PC:

Click the Start button, click All Programs, and then click Windows Live Photo Gallery.

Double click the picture to which you want to add a tag.

In the Info pane, click Add Tags.

Type the new tag, and then press ENTER.

Your pictures will be saved automatically in the Pictures folder with the tag name, so you can find them easily later.

Share your pictures via e-mail Share your latest pictures with friends by sending them in e-mail. To send via e-mail, click the Start button, click All Programs, and then click Windows Live Photo Gallery.

Share your pictures online

Select the pictures you want to send. To select more than one picture, hold down the CTRL key while you click the photos you want. Click the E-mail button on the toolbar. The Attach Files dialog box will appear. In the Attach Files dialog box, select a picture size (the default size, medium, is usually okay), and then click Attach. Windows opens a new e-mail message with the pictures you selected attached. Enter the e-mail addresses of the recipients, type a subject, and add a message. When your message is ready, click Send.

To publish to your Windows Live Spaces, click the Start button, click All Programs and then click Windows Live Photo Gallery.

Select the pictures you want to publish. To select more than one picture, hold down the CTRL key while you click the photos you want.

Click the Publish button on the toolbar.

Click Publish on Windows Live Spaces, enter your Album Title, then click Publish.

Print pictures With Windows Vista and Windows Live services, it’s easy to print high-quality color photos to share. Just follow these steps:

Click the Start button, click All Programs, and then click Windows Live Photo Gallery.

Select the pictures that you want to print.

On the toolbar, click Print, and then click Print again.

In the Print Pictures dialog box, choose your print options, and then click Print.

Transfer your pictures In the AutoPlay dialog box that appears, click Import pictures using Windows to transfer pictures to your computer.

Get started now There are two ways to transfer your pictures, depending on your equipment: Using a USB Cable

Using a Memory Card

• If you have a universal serial bus (USB) cable, use it to connect your camera to your computer.

• If you have a memory card reader, remove the memory card from your camera.

• Turn on the camera.

• Slide the memory card into the card reader. If your card reader is not built in to your PC, plug it into your computer’s USB port after you put the card into the reader.

You can add descriptive tags to your pictures as you transfer them to your PC, so that they’re titled and organized in a way that makes them easy to find later. Simply type a word, date, or other meaningful descriptor in the Importing Pictures and Videos dialog box. (You can also add tags later. See 10 Exciting Things #1: Organize and share your pictures.) You can watch the progress as your pictures are transferred.

View your photos on your TV.

Connect your PC with Windows Vista Home Premium or Windows Vista Ultimate to your television set and view photo slide shows on the TV’s larger screen.

Get started now Make sure you have transferred your photos to your new PC before you start. (See how to do this in 10 Exciting Things #1: Save your pictures to your PC.)

After you have determined which port to use, turn off your computer and position it near your television. Disconnect the monitor, but leave the mouse and keyboard connected.

Connect your computer’s video port to your television with the appropriate video cable.

Turn on your television and set it to the input that matches the video port connected to your computer. You might need to refer to your television’s user’s guide for instructions on how to do this.

Turn on your computer. You should see Windows displayed on your television.

Create a slide show

Connect your computer to a TV Your computer must have a video port that matches one of the input ports on your television. The types of ports are: A: VGA Port B: DVI Port C: Composite Video Port D: S-Video Port NOTE: if your computer doesn’t have any of these TV-compatible ports, then you will need to install a new video card that has the right connection.

You can create and play a new slide show for school or work on the spot:

Click the Start button, click All Programs, and then click Windows Live Photo Gallery.

Click the photos you want to display in the slide show. To select more than one picture, hold down the CTRL key while you click the photos you want.

Click the Slide Show button at the bottom to start the slide show.

If you don’t know your e-mail address, server names, or username, you can get them from your Internet Service Provider (ISP). When you’re ready:

Click the Start button, click All Programs, and then click Windows Live Mail.

If an information box pops up, follow instructions. If no box pops up, click Add, choose the type of account you want to add, click Next, and then follow the instructions.

Instant Messaging

Check for new messages

Windows Vista supports instant messaging using Windows Live Messenger. Simply download and install Windows Live Messenger to connect any way you want—by text, voice, or video—from your PC or your mobile phone.*

To view any new e-mail messages in our Windows Live Mail inbox:

Set up your Windows Live Mail account You can set up your Windows Live e-mail account and use it to manage most existing e-mail accounts in a few easy steps. But first, make sure you have all the necessary information: • You will need to choose a display name, which will appear at the top of your e-mail messages. • Have your e-mail address available. • Identify your incoming and outgoing e-mail server names. • Find out your e-mail username, which you use to sign in to your e-mail server. • Have your password available.

*To place a PC to PC call, both users must have Messenger installed, a compatible microphone and speakers or headset, and Internet access (webcam and broadband required for video).

Click the Start button, click All Programs, and then click Windows Live Mail.

Click the Tools menu, point to Send and Receive, and then click Receive All.

To send e-mail messages from your Outbox at the same time as you check for new mail, point to Send and Receive, and then click Send and Receive All.

Now you’re ready to turn on the Parental Controls for each child

Click the Start button, click Control Panel, and then, under User Accounts, click Set up Parental Controls. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

Click the name on the standard user account for which you want to set Parental Controls.

Under Parental Controls, click On.

Adjust the individual settings that you want to control for your child’s user account.

Parental Controls Help protect your children from unsafe or inappropriate content by specifying which games, programs, and Web sites they can access—and what hours they can use the PC for fun and education. To get started, set up a standard user account for each child:

Click the Start button, click Control Panel, click User Accounts and Family Safety, and then click User Accounts.

Click Manage another account. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

Click Create a new account.

Type the name you want to give the user account, click an account type, and then click Create Account.

Permissions To set up Permissions to a file or folder:

Right-click the file or folder, and then click Properties.

Click the Security tab, and then click Edit.

Click the name of the person OR click Add, and type the name of the person, then click OK.

Select the level of Permissions you want to assign, and click OK.

When you do not know where to look

Find anything on your computer and the Internet.

With Instant Search in Windows Vista, quickly locate files, e-mail messages, applications, school projects, pictures—virtually anything stored on your PC. Use Windows Live Toolbar to find information online.

Find files, folders, and e-mail messages Save time by locating a specific file using the Instant Search box, located at the base of the Start menu and the top of every Windows Explorer window. As you type in the name of the file you’re trying to locate, files that match your text will appear. When you see the file you want, you can stop typing.

Let Windows Vista help you locate files anywhere in your personal folder (which includes Documents, Pictures, Music, and Desktop), e-mail, school and work folders, and offline files.

Click the Start button and then click Search.

Type a word or part of a word in the Search box.

As you type, files from various locations on your computer that match your text will appear.

Do any of the following in the Search pane: • Click a filter button to show only certain file types, such as e-mail, documents, pictures, or music. • Click the Advanced Search button to show additional filters. • Select a different search location in the Location list. You can choose to search an entire hard disk or any other location.

Find information on the Internet Type a keyword or phrase in the Windows Live Toolbar box in the upper-right corner of the Address bar and then press ENTER (or press ALT+ENTER to display search results in a new tab).

Watch TV shows on your PC.

With Windows Media Center* in Windows Vista Home Premium or Windows Vista Ultimate, you can watch, pause, and record live TV shows, movies, and educational programs right on your computer.

Get started now Windows Media Center organizes your entire digital entertainment library on your PC—optimized for viewing through your television. You can even watch and record TV with Windows Media Center. To watch TV on your PC, you need a special video adapter called a TV tuner card for your PC. Just plug the cable, satellite, or antenna signal into the TV tuner card—and you’re ready to watch.

Never miss a favorite television show again. With Windows Media Center in Windows Vista, you can watch your show wherever you are, as long as there’s a TV signal. To watch:

Record a TV show To record a TV show or movie while it is playing

Move the mouse, and then click Record on the transport controls.

To record a TV show or movie that will air at a later time

You can pause your show by moving the mouse and clicking Pause, then restart your show where you left off by moving the mouse and pressing Play on the transport controls. You can also use the transport controls to control the playback of the paused TV show or movie. Move the mouse and then click Skip Backward, Rewind, Fast Forward, or Skip Forward.

From the Start button, click Windows Media Center. On that start screen, scroll to TV + Movies, click guide, locate a TV show that is currently airing, and then click the show. To change the channel, move the mouse, and then click ch + or ch - to go up one channel or down one channel.

(Optional) As the player begins ripping the CD, clear the check boxes next to any songs that you don’t want to rip. Or, click Stop Rip, make your selections, and click Start Rip to restart ripping. (Partially ripped songs are not saved.)

Copy songs from a CD You can use Windows Media Player to copy songs from audio CDs to your computer. This process is known as ripping.

Connect to the Internet.

Insert an audio CD into the CD drive, and then click the Rip tab on the taskbar. The Player begins ripping the CD automatically.

Download songs from online stores

Click the arrow below the Online Stores tab in the taskbar, and then click Browse all Online Stores. A Web page is displayed that lists all of the stores that are available. Click a store you are interested in, and the Player will display the store. For specific questions about how to use a particular online store, see the customer service or Help links on the store’s Web page.

If you want to return to this store regularly, you can mark it as a favorite by clicking the arrow below the Online Stores tab, and then clicking Add current service to menu.

Play games.

In Windows Vista, the Games Explorer helps you find, start, save, and remove games quickly and easily.

To install a game Windows Vista Business and Windows Vista Enterprise do not come with prepackaged games. To enjoy a game on a PC running Windows Vista Business or Windows Vista Enterprise you will need to:

Install one or more Windows games: • Click the Start button. • Click Control Panel, click Programs, and then click Turn Windows features on or off.

Get started now

• In the Windows Features dialog box, select the Games check box, and then click OK.

Your Windows Vista-based PC comes preloaded with several great games: Solitaire, FreeCell, Minesweeper, Hearts, Spider Solitaire, Mahjong Titans, Chess Titans, and Purble Place.

• If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

NOTE: Not all games are available on all versions of Windows Vista.

Play a game To play a game in Windows Vista Home Premium or Windows Vista Ultimate:
