Reading Strategies Inventory Directions: Listed below are 15 statements about what people do when they read school related materials, such as textbooks, current events articles or other expository text in a social studies class. Five numbers follow each statement (1, 2, 3, 4, and 5) and each number means the following: • 1 = “I never or almost never do this.” • 2 = “I do this only occasionally.” • 3 = “I sometimes do this” (about 50% of the time). • 4 = “I usually do this.” • 5 =”I always or almost always do this.” After reading each statement, circle the number that applies to you using the scale provided. There are no wrong or right answers to the statements in this inventory. Strategy 1. I take notes while reading to help me understand what I read 2. I think about what I already know about the topic before reading. 3. I preview the text to see what the reading is about before reading. 4. When the text becomes difficult, I read aloud for better understanding. 5. I summarize what I read to reflect on important information in the text. 6. I read slowly and carefully to be sure I understand what I’m reading. 7. I underline, highlight, or circle information in the text to help me remember it. 8. I try to picture or visualize information to help me remember it. 9. I read with the main idea in mind. 10. I use aids like boldface print, visuals, to identify key information. 11. I reread text when it becomes difficult to understand. 12. I use reference materials such as dictionaries to help me understand what I read. 13.
