Stepping in tune with my environment in the mountains, while reaching lofty goals on the tops of distant peaks, is where I find all three versions of ‘happy:’ instant gratification, hyper-awareness of presence, and the fulfillment of connection. My soul lets out one delicious sigh of relief, simply calm.

I would like to dedicate the work I put into this calendar to my best friend’s mom, Joanne Sarna—one of the stongest women I know. She is powerful in hope, courage, faith, love and grace. My wish with this calendar is that no family will ever have to go through a loss like the Sarnas.

I lead a healthy and active lifestyle because it helps me live more. When I feel my muscles working at their max and my lungs sucking for air, when the energy I get from eating healthy pulses through my system and my body is working at it’s optimal, I know I’m living the only thing we’ve got for certain: the very moment.

Choosing to live a healthy outdoor lifestyle was never really a choice. It was more of just a natural progression of continuing to follow my passion of playing sports. Being active brings me outside and creates experiences that are unimaginable for someone going to the gym. So by playing as much as I do, that makes me a very active and healthy person. I feel very lucky to be able to play.

When I was little and we would go to the lake, my mom would always encourage me to jump off the high dock into the water, even if I was scared. I quickly became addicted to rush of accomplishment that I felt when I took the plunge, overcoming fear and doing something that challenged me. Those small leaps fostered a love for adventure that has ultimately shaped my life. I feel lucky to be able to pursue my goals with an able body and mind, and know that it would be impossible without maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Every day I try to find balance and make it a priority to do things that make me feel good… Being healthy allows me to continue taking jumps that I never thought possible.

Skiing has so many amazing perks and benefits—adrenaline, thrill, challenge, strength, fitness, socializing, and most importantly, FUN. Whether at a resort or in the backcountry, skiing allows us to spend hours outdoors in the winter. I believe that humans were meant to spend as much time as possible outdoors—it’s good for our bodies and minds—and I’m incredibly grateful that skiing gives me the chance to do that all winter long.

When my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer, I realized how volatile our state of health can be. One second we are gracefully shredding; the next, an unforeseen bump can send us painfully crashing in the left field. My mother was both lucky and spirited in overcoming this misfortune. Her greatest assets were an ability to keep smiling, maintaining a positive attitude and getting support from her peers. It is after all in the face of adversity that we are given opportunity to be our best at any given time, and learn about ourselves in how we overcome obstacles and hurdles. A couple summers ago my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer. I have never felt so scared and helpless in my life. I am so proud of her strength and courage during that time and more importantly, how she changed her life after the experience. This is for my mom as she continues to live life to the fullest. Peace, love, health and find some pow!

Skiing through powder is like letting your soul dance with the mountains. It commands respect for the forces of nature beyond which we can see. But, to find balance amongst these forces often yields moments of pure joy. I believe that the more time we spend living in those moments of pure joy, the healthier and happier our lives will be.

The life I live is basic, fun and active. Snowflakes falling make me smile. I love to ski. Last January I had it all taken from me when I suffered from a stroke. With the help of family and friends I’m slowly but surely getting back most of what was lost and making some changes along the way. Life is short and the changes we make are a path to new experiences. I hope you too can find a trail to happiness if you are not already on it. My grandmother Esther passed away from breast cancer and I dedicate this to her. Enjoy the snow!

Amy McDermid I love to play outside. I try to actively spend every day skiing, mountain biking, running, cycling, or even going to the gym. My Nana, a non-smoker, passed away from lung cancer. I always make sure to wear sunscreen and I definitely don't smoke. Staying away from processed foods is an easy way to feel great. The simplest way to stay healthy is to find an amazing group of active friends and spend time together having fun!

Being diagnosed with skin cancer was an incredible life experience, allowing me to experience pain, uncertainty, aniticipation, sadness, happiness, joy, peace and love all at once. Beyond expanding my emotional realm, it made me realize how valuable my loved ones are and how precious life truly is. Life is too short – don’t pass up opportunities and learn from the challenges that life mysteriously offers you. -Lotte Bond Photographer: Jordan Manley
