For each line of the following table find a matching prism and pyramid (or cylinder and cone). They should match in that they have the same (congruent) bases, and the same height. Measure in centimeters the indicated dimensions of the prism, which are the same for the pyramid. Calculate the area of the base, B, then calculate the volume of the prism. Next, measure with rice or oats the volume of the prism and of the pyramid. Find the ratio of their volumes. Base shape
Show work for finding base area
Base Area Result (B)
Height (h)
Calculate Prism Volume (V=B*h)
Measure Prism Volume V1 (Rice or Oats)
Measure V2 / V1 Pyramid Volume V2 (Rice or Oats)
Triangle Square Rectangle Circle 1 Circle 2
What do you notice about the values in the last column, V2/V1? Hypothesize (describe with an educated guess) a formula for finding the volume of a pyramid or cone.
