Chapter 23

Proverbs 23:1 When thou sittest to eat with a ruler, consider diligently what is before thee: Proverbs 23:2 And put a knife to thy throat, if thou be a man given to appetite. note: The word “knife” is used seven times in scripture. note: The word “throat” is used seven times in scripture.

Proverbs 23:3 Be not desirous of his dainties: for they are deceitful meat. The sin that we’re warned against is the over indulgence of luxury and sensuality, and the indulgence of the appetite in eating and drinking, a sin that most easily surrounds us.

When thou sittest to eat with a ruler, consider diligently what is before thee: When we enter into temptation, we are in the most danger of falling into this sin: And put a knife to thy throat, if thou be a man given to appetite. Temperance and moderation is the key: "Put a knife to thy throat, that is, restrain thyself, as it were with a sword hanging over thy head, from all excess. Faith + virtue + knowledge + temperance + patience + godliness + brotherly kindness + charity = being fruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. (II Peter ch. 1)

Be not desirous of his dainties: for they are deceitful meat. dainties: 4303

1. tasty or savory food, delectable food, dainties Adjective - Especially pleasing to the taste;

It is lust that is desirous of dainties, and we cannot in faith pray for things that we are going to consume on our lust. The things that we lust for are not food convenient for mind, body, or estate. They are deceitful meat, and therefore David, instead of praying for them, prays against them, Psalm Set a watch, O LORD, before my mouth; keep the door of my lips. 141:3 Psalm Incline not my heart to any evil thing, to practice wicked works with men that work 141:4 iniquity: and let me not eat of their dainties. We ought to observe what our own iniquity is, and, if we find ourselves addicted to flesh-pleasing, we must not only stand upon our guard against temptations from without, but subdue the corruption within. That is temperance. Daniel But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the 1:8 king's meat, nor with the wine which he drank: therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself. note: The word "desirous" is used six times in scripture. note: The word "dainty" or “danties” is used six times in scripture. These are spots in your feasts of charity, when they feast with you, feeding themselves without fear: clouds they are without water, carried about of winds; trees whose fruit withereth, without fruit, twice dead, plucked up by the roots; Raging waves of the sea, foaming out their own shame; wandering stars, to whom is reserved the blackness of darkness for ever.

Proverbs 23:4 Labour not to be rich: cease from thine own wisdom. Labour not to be rich: Ecclesiastes He that loveth silver shall not be satisfied with silver; nor he that loveth abundance 5:10 with increase: this is also vanity. cease from thine own wisdom: Proverbs Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. 3:5

Proverbs 23:5 Wilt thou set thine eyes upon that which is not? for riches certainly make themselves wings; they fly away as an eagle toward heaven. Haggai

Now therefore thus saith the LORD of hosts; Consider your ways.

Ye have sown much, and bring in little; ye eat, but ye have not enough; ye drink, but ye are not filled with drink; ye clothe you, but there is none warm; and he that earneth wages earneth wages to put it into a bag with holes. Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Consider your ways.

All the labour of man is for his mouth, and yet the appetite is not filled. For what hath the wise more than the fool? what hath the poor, that knoweth to walk before the living? Better is the sight of the eyes than the wandering of the desire: this is also vanity and vexation of spirit.

Proverbs 23:6 Eat thou not the bread of him that hath an evil eye, neither desire thou his dainty meats: Proverbs 23:7 For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he: Eat and drink, saith he to thee; but his heart is not with thee. The Pharisees had an evil eye and always tried to trap Jesus into breaking their laws so that they could bring him up on charges. Luke And as he spake, a certain Pharisee besought him to dine with him: and he went in, and 11:37 sat down to meat. Luke And when the Pharisee saw it, he marvelled that he had not first washed before dinner. 11:38 Luke And the Lord said unto him, Now do ye Pharisees make clean the outside of the cup and 11:39 the platter; but your inward part is full of ravening and wickedness. Eat and drink, saith he to thee; but his heart is not with thee. Luke And as he said these things unto them, the scribes and the Pharisees began to urge him 11:53 vehemently, and to provoke him to speak of many things: Luke Laying wait for him, and seeking to catch something out of his mouth, that they might 11:54 accuse him.

Proverbs 23:8 The morsel which thou hast eaten shalt thou vomit up, and lose thy sweet words. Lose -

Proverbs 23:9 Speak not in the ears of a fool: for he will despise the wisdom of thy words. I Timothy 6:20 I Timothy 6:21

O Timothy, keep that which is committed to thy trust, avoiding profane and vain babblings, and oppositions of science falsely so called: Which some professing have erred concerning the faith. Grace be with thee. Amen.

Proverbs 23:11 For their redeemer is mighty; he shall plead their cause with thee. This Proverb has a double meaning. It speaks of a moral landmark; Exodus Ye shall not afflict any widow, or fatherless child. 22:22 Exodus If thou afflict them in any wise, and they cry at all unto me, I will surely hear their cry; 22:23 Exodus And my wrath shall wax hot, and I will kill you with the sword; and your wives shall 22:24 be widows, and your children fatherless. And it speaks of property: Matthew Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye devour widows' houses, and 23:14 for a pretence make long prayer: therefore ye shall receive the greater damnation.

Proverbs 23:12 Apply thine heart unto instruction, and thine ears to the words of knowledge. Study to show thyself approved unto God: II Timothy Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be 2:15 ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

Proverbs 23:13 Withhold not correction from the child: for if thou beatest him with the rod, he shall not die.

Proverbs 23:14 Thou shalt beat him with the rod, and shalt deliver his soul from hell. Hebrews 12:6 Hebrews 12:7 Hebrews 12:8

For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth. If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not? But if ye be without chastisement, whereof all are partakers, then are ye bastards, and not sons.

Proverbs 23:15 My son, if thine heart be wise, my heart shall rejoice, even mine. Proverbs 23:16 Yea, my reins shall rejoice, when thy lips speak right things. Proverbs 23:17 Let not thine heart envy sinners: but be thou in the fear of the LORD all the day long. James 4:5 James 4:6 James 4:7 James 4:8

Do ye think that the scripture saith in vain, The spirit that dwelleth in us lusteth to envy? But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble. Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.

Proverbs 23:18 For surely there is an end; and thine expectation shall not be cut off. Keep your eyes on Jesus. Proverbs The desire of the righteous is only good: but the expectation of the wicked is 11:23 wrath. Jesus’ message to the church of Thyatira, let’s them know that the wicked Jezebel and her children will be cut off. The children of God are warned not to meddle with them. Revelation Notwithstanding I have a few things against thee, because thou sufferest that woman 2:20 Jezebel, which calleth herself a prophetess, to teach and to seduce my servants to commit fornication, and to eat things sacrificed unto idols. Revelation And I gave her space to repent of her fornication; and she repented not. 2:21 Revelation Behold, I will cast her into a bed, and them that commit adultery with her into great 2:22 tribulation, except they repent of their deeds. Revelation And I will kill her children with death; and all the churches shall know that I am he 2:23 which searcheth the reins and hearts: and I will give unto every one of you according to your works.

Proverbs 23:19 Hear thou, my son, and be wise, and guide thine heart in the way.

See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, Redeeming the time, because the days are evil. Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is. And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit; Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord; Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ; Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God.

If a man have a stubborn and rebellious son, which will not obey the voice of his father, or the voice of his mother, and that, when they have chastened him, will not hearken unto them: Then shall his father and his mother lay hold on him, and bring him out unto the elders of his city, and unto the gate of his place; And they shall say unto the elders of his city, This our son is stubborn and rebellious, he will not obey our voice; he is a glutton, and a drunkard. And all the men of his city shall stone him with stones, that he die: so shalt thou put evil away from among you; and all Israel shall hear, and fear.

Proverbs 23:22 Hearken unto thy father that begat thee, and despise not thy mother when she is old. Proverbs 15:5 A fool despiseth his father's instruction: but he that regardeth reproof is prudent.

Proverbs 23:23 Buy the truth, and sell it not; also wisdom, and instruction, and understanding. The truth shall make you free. John Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are 8:31 ye my disciples indeed; John And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. 8:32 Jesus tells the church of the Laodiceans that they do not have the truth and that they are lacking wisdom, instruction, and understanding. “Sell it not” doesn’t only mean that we should teach others for free, it also means that we shouldn’t compromise the truth for goods or comfort. Revelation Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; 3:17 and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked: Revelation I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white 3:18 raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see.

Revelation As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent. 3:19 Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life: John Thomas saith unto him, Lord, we know not whither thou goest; and how can we know the 14:5 way? John Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, 14:6 but by me. John If ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also: and from henceforth ye know 14:7 him, and have seen him.

Proverbs 23:24 The father of the righteous shall greatly rejoice: and he that begetteth a wise child shall have joy of him. Proverbs 23:25 Thy father and thy mother shall be glad, and she that bare thee shall rejoice. Proverbs 23:26 My son, give me thine heart, and let thine eyes observe my ways. I Kings 8:61

Let your heart therefore be perfect with the LORD our God, to walk in his statutes, and to keep his commandments, as at this day.

Proverbs 23:27 For a whore is a deep ditch; and a strange woman is a narrow pit. Proverbs 23:28 She also lieth in wait as for a prey, and increaseth the transgressors among men. Proverbs 5:3 For the lips of a strange woman drop as an honeycomb, and her mouth is smoother than oil: Proverbs 5:4 But her end is bitter as wormwood, sharp as a twoedged sword. Proverbs 5:5 Her feet go down to death; her steps take hold on hell.

Proverbs 23:29 Who hath woe? who hath sorrow? who hath contentions? who hath babbling? who hath wounds without cause? who hath redness of eyes? Proverbs 23:30 They that tarry long at the wine; they that go to seek mixed wine. Proverbs 23:31 Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, when it giveth his colour in the cup, when it moveth itself aright. Proverbs 23:32 At the last it biteth like a serpent, and stingeth like an adder. Proverbs 23:33 Thine eyes shall behold strange women, and thine heart shall utter perverse things. Proverbs 23:34 Yea, thou shalt be as he that lieth down in the midst of the sea, or as he that lieth upon the top of a mast. Proverbs 23:35 They have stricken me, shalt thou say, and I was not sick; they have beaten me, and I felt it not: when shall I awake? I will seek it yet again.
