Since the area of a square is (side length)2 and the area of a triangle is 1/2(base)(height), we can write the equation: (a+ b)2 = c2 + 4[(1/2)a b] (a+b)(a+b) = c2 + 2ab a2 + 2ab + b2 = c2 + 2ab Now subtract the 2ab from both sides of the equation, and we have the Pythagorean theorem:
