We know that the sum of 3 sides is 2009 so we could say: 2a + b = 2009 if the sides of the rectangle are: a, a, b, and b. Also, we know that the sum of the fourth side(b) plus the diagonal is also 2009. That equation would be: b + d = 2009. Now, if we solve the second equation for b, we would get b = 2009 – d. If you then go back to the Rirst equation and solve for 2a, you get 2a = 2009 – b…………hmmmm, now see if you can go from there. The problem is asking you for the RATIO of the length of the longer side to the length of the shorter side. I think I have possibly given you too much of a hint on this one.
