The Fairtrade Certifications

Fairtrade Labellings Organizations International Fairtrade Labelling Organizations (FLO) International is a nonprofit, multi-stakeholder association involving 23 member organizations . It is just Eleven years since Fairtrade Labelling Organizations International (FLO) was created in April 1997. The 14 National Labelling Initiatives, which were at that time operating independently in their respective markets,came together to create FLO as an umbrella organization with a mission to set Fairtrade Standards, to support, inspect and certify producers,as well as to harmonize the Fairtrade message across the movement. The organization develops and reviews Fairtrade Standards and provide support to fairtrade certified producers by assisting them in gaining and maintaining Fairtrade Certification and capitalizing on market opportunities. In only a decade, FLO has developed from being a small organization into a multinational association with global outreach. The number of FairtradeCertified Producer Organizations has tripled and Fairtrade sales have enjoyed an average growth of 40% per year. The Certification is done by an independent international certification company,. FLO-CERT GMBH is responsible for the inspection and certification of producer organizations and traders against the Fairtrade Standards. The independence of the inspections ensures that the Fairtrade Minimum Price reaches the producers and that the Fairtrade Certification Mark is only used on products coming from Fairtrade Certified Producers. The organization develops and reviews Fairtrade Standards and provide support to fairtrade certified producers by assisting them in gaining and maintaining Fairtrade Certification and capitalizing on market opportunities. International "emc-Mark"

The International "emc-Mark" appears on products meeting the electromagnetic compatibility requirements of Europe, the United States, Japan, Australia, or any combination of the four. In the United States, some types of products can't be sold without proof of compliance to U.S. electromagnetic compatibility requirements. The types of products that are subject to EMC testing include medical and dental equipment, computers, microwave ovens, televisions, radios, transmitters, and radio-controlled equipment. The International (emc-mark) includes evaluation of products for the following regions: European Union Japan USA Australia

EMC Standards Demonstrating Compliance Every electrical product on sale, or connected to a power supply in the EU,has to meet emission and immunity standards. Just as there is European legislation that sets standards for the safety of electrical appliances, so the Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) Directive establishes a benchmark for compliance that manufacturers are required to conform to. Application of an independent certifi cation EMC Mark can be used to demonstrate compliance of a product with the EMC directive. Testing and Certification for the European Region under the International "emc-Mark" program will result in compliance with the EMC Directive 89/336/EEC and EMC related performance sections of product specific directives and standards. The EMC Directive requires that products should be constructed so that any electromagnetic disturbance generated does not exceed a level which interferes with the intended operation of other electrical products as well as minimizing the effects of electromagnetic interference upon it from other products. Domestic electrotechnical products are generally assessed against the following European emission and immunity standards: EN55014-1 Product family emission standard Household appliances, electric tools & similar EN55014-2 Product family immunity standard Household appliances, electric tools & similar EN61000-3-2 Basic emission standard Harmonic currents EN61000-3-3 Basic emission standard Voltage fl uctuations and fl icker EN55013 Product family emission standard Broadcast receivers & associated equipment EN55020 Product family immunity standard Broadcast receivers & associated equipment Europe isn't the only market to establish this type of regulation. In the United States, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and, for some product categories, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) prohibit the marketing or sale of certain products - including medical and dental equipment, computers, microwave ovens, televisions, radios, transmitters, and radio-controlled devices - unless a manufacturer has proof of compliance, which can be best demonstrated through independent, third-party certification. Also, the Voluntary Control Council for Interference (VCCI) has established EMC emission requirements in Japan, and compliance, although it is not yet mandatory, is rapidly becoming the norm. In addition, the Australian Communications Authority (ACA) has developed mandatory EMC emission standards for electrical and electronic products sold in Australia. And Canadian regulatory agencies traditionally consider compliance with FCC methods and procedures to indicate compliance with that country's EMC emission requirements, the International "emc-Mark" may also help you gain acceptance of your product in Canada.

Models of International Approvals & Certification Marks

GS-mark

GS (Geprüfte Sicherheit, meaning Tested Safety) is a specific German mark applicable to a wide range of products, including electrical consumer equipment. The mark is owned and monitored by German safety authorities, but is voluntary offered through a number of appointed certification bodies. The GS mark, based on German Safety Law, is widely recognised throughout Europe. It will differentiate your product and provide a strategic marketing advantage to help sell more products. It is particularly important for the German market and independent market research shows that German consumers demand and will pay more for products bearing this certification mark.............

CE - Marking

This is the regulatory European product marking allowing access to the EU/EEA member countries (and even some EU candidate countries in East Europe), as dictated by EU Directives and corresponding national regulations. It is required for a wide range of products, including electrical consumer products, medical equipment and machinery. The CE-marking is essentially based on the manufacturer’s own declaration of conformity with the relevant Directives. For some cases of high risk products and where European product standards are not used, the involvement of an authorized Notified Body (or Competent Body) is required as basis for the manufacturer’s Declaration of Conformity (DoC) and for CE-marking of the product. The PSE Mark is a mandatory mark for Japan according to the Electrical Appliance and Material Safety Law (DENAN). It is administered by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI). Products regulated under the DENAN law are categorized as Specified Products (SPs) and Non-Specified Products (NPSs). ENEC (European Norms Electrical Certification) ENEC (European Norms Electrical Certification) is a voluntary mark for luminaires, luminaire components, electrical and electronic office and IT equipment, safety isolating and separating transformers, power supply units and switches for household appliances. It certifies the compliance of a product with the harmonized European standards. ENEC is widely recognized throughout Europe. Under the ENEC program, applicants can be accepted worldwide, with the exception of luminaries, which is open to manufacturers in Europe only..............................

AR- Mark (Argentina)

Used in conjunction with the mandatory "S" Mark of Argentina's National Office of Internal Commerce (Direccion Nacional de Comercio Interior, or DNCI), the "AR " Mark indicates a product's compliance with Phase III of Argentina's Resolution 92/98. Most electrical and electronic products entering Argentina will have to display the "S" Mark adjacent to the Mark of an accredited and Recognized third-party certification organization ........

BR- Mark (Brazil) Used in conjunction with the "INMETRO" Mark of National Institute of Metrology, Standardization and Industrial Quality in Brazil, the "BR " Mark indicates that the product complies with the Brazilian standards (primarily modeled after IEC/ISO standards with some local deviations). Certification is mandatory for a list of product categories which includes: switches, plugs, socket -outlets, flexible cords, circuit breakers, wire & cables, magnetic & electronic ballast, voltage regulators, medical devices and electrical equipment for hazardous locations. Voluntary certification can be obtained for all other product categories (including audio, video and information technology equipment) to differentiate your product in the competitive Brazilian market.
