PRIORITIES

Live life then with a due sense of responsibility, =not as men who do not know the meaning and purpose of life, but as those who do. = Make the best use of your time despite all the difficulties of these days. = Don’t be vague, but firmly grasp what you know to be the will of the Lord. Eph 5:15-17 jbp In a race everyone runs, but only one person gets first prize. So run your race to win. [25] To win the contest you must deny yourselves many things that would keep you from doing your best. An athlete goes to all this trouble just to win a blue ribbon or a silver cup, but we do it for a heavenly reward that never disappears. [26] So I run straight to the goal with purpose in every step. I fight to win. I'm not just shadow-boxing or playing around. [27] Like an athlete I punish my body, treating it roughly, training it to do what it should, not what it wants to. Otherwise I fear that after enlisting others for the race, I myself might be declared unfit and ordered to stand aside. 1 Cor. 9:24-27 (Living) I do not want to see you now and make only a passing visit; I hope to spend some time with you, if the Lord permits. 1 Cor. 16:7 (NIV)

Priorities can be by S__________________ or by S_______________ discussion What were your top priorities when you were 21? What are your top priorities right now? How have these changed? How have they stayed the same? What are reasonable influences that appropriately can refocus or modify our priorities?

God’s purpose

our purpose

priorities

practices

What are common purpose elements for any and all of us? What are examples of distinctive and personalized elements of purpose? Write a purpose statement ( some call this a mission statement) and share it. Write three priorities and share them. Do your priorities seem to fit with the purpose? Example: Purpose = To be a world class rodeo bull rider. Priorities: Physical fitness, writing poetry, attend rodeos. What is wrong? Poetry? Either must change Purpose (to be artistic world class bull rider) or change priorities (leave off the poetry).

USE OF TIME

PRINCIPLES 1. Know your mission (framework for decisions) The wrong question is “Do I have time? 2. Limit Expectations. You will never get it all done

Don't do what others can do and will do when there are so many things others CAN NOT do and WILL NOT do.

3. Selectivity. Differentiate between the urgent and the important. Read the booklet, Tyranny of the Urgent. 4. Operate with a margin. Read Margin.

The good is the enemy of the best.

5. Be a finisher 2 Cor 8:10-11

It is more important to make the days count than to count the days.

6. Accountability. Set up a system for periodic checks by someone else. Prov 27:17, James 5:16

POINTERS

The main difference between one man and another is the way he uses his time.

1. Have ONE only system for planning and scheduling 2. Learn to say _NO___ 3. Divide tasks. Assign yourself work. 4. Duplexing. Learn to do two things at once. Examples: 5. Don't hop from task to task. 6. Preserve windfalls. Don’t waste the time given to you in the form of canceled meetings, etc. 7. Plug Leaks a. Procrastination b. None or poor planning c. Over scheduling d. Interruptions e. Tyranny of urgent f. Tyranny of expectations of others g. Faulty priorities h. Worry

EFFICIENCY is doing the job right. EFFECTIVENESS is doing the right job right. Each day I must choose to do a few things very well, some things fair, many things not at all. If your output exceeds your intake, your upkeep will be your downfall. A committee is a group of the unqualified doing the unnecessary for the unwilling.

I have only just a minute, only sixty seconds in it. Forced upon me, I can't refuse it; But it's up to me to use it. I must not lose it; give account if I abuse it. Just a tiny little minute, but eternity is in it.

Start by rewriting your mission in life. Reinforce it with scripture. LIFE VERSE is a scripture portion that is your “all time favorite” which encompasses who you are and what you want to be. Then take inventory of last year, praising Him for what He has done in your life so far. Then prayerfully set goals for next year and finally get a good friend to review them with you and pray with you over them. Put this on your schedule now.

1. PURPOSE IN LIFE Discovering God's Purpose. What has he called me to do? "The Lord will fulfill HIS purpose for me." Psalm 138:8 a. My purpose in life should be scripturally based. Examples: Acts 20:24 Col 1:28-29 1 Cor 10:31 b. Worthy of giving my life to. c. My purpose should affect my life in an observable way. d. My purpose should be unique to me, as far as I can discern at the present time.God is incredibly creative.

2. First take INVENTORY of my current status: a. Am I bolder with sin now than this time last year? b. Do sins which once seemed great now seem insignificant? c. Is Jesus not as familiar as at the beginning of the year? d. Do I now spend more time talking to men than to God, and more time reading books other than the Bible? e. Am I more interested now than a year ago in what God knows, or in what men think? f. Have I picked a favorite doctrine or group or fashionable discipline which I defend more than Jesus? g. Am I more tender or harsher toward those who disagree with me? h. Is there one who has made steps toward faith in Christ this year because of my ministry? i. Have I had a significant impact in the life of one believer this year? j. Where am I? Stagnating, growing colder, unstable, enthusiastic, going backwards, bitter, tired? k. Where do I want to be? Helping others, effective in prayer, vital witness, example for others, equipped with the WORD, wise and effective, mature.

3. YEAR VERSE Select a verse that can form the basis of my goals. This is a verse or passage that comprises the main needs in my life now. Examples: Hebrews 12:1-2 1 Tim 4:16 Matt 6:33-34 2Chron 12:14

Romans 12:1-2 Isa 50:7 Eph 5:15-17 Ezra 7:10

Col 2:6-7 Phil 1:9-11 Prov 3:5-6 Psa 1:2-3 Prov 31:11-12 Col 1:9-10 1 Tim 4:7-8

Memorize it and tie to your goals. Meditate on it each DAY!

4. WHAT GOALS to set? Luke 2:52, Jesus increased in wisdom, stature, favor with God and man. Likewise, I should develop four ways: a. Physical (weight, exercise, grooming) b. Mental (books, study, writing, business) c. Social (friends, hospitality, family) d. Spiritual. Divide into Intake and output. Some persons will stuff themselves with spiritual knowledge and never get around to sharing with anyone. Others will burn out and never receive any significant input. If your OUTPUT exceeds your INTAKE, your UPKEEP will be your DOWNFALL! PRIORITIES

1)

INTAKE Quiet Time, Scripture memory, Bible study and reading, Church, Christian books & tapes 2) OUTPUT: witnessing, testimony, church responsibilities, establishing new Christians, fellowship, teaching, committees (try to avoid serving in more than one).

5. HOW to set goals a. Write LIFE GOALS in each of the four areas, answering “What would I like said of me at the end of life?” b. Then write goals for next year in each of the areas. Particularly write goals where you need to accomplish a project, achieve a milestone, and break or make a habit. Avoid listing activities you are already accomplishing. c. Make your goals B I G. Make a small demand and you get a small sacrifice; make a big demand and get a big sacrifice. BUT keep them realistic. d. Use Intermediate Goals to record what can not be accomplished in the next 12 months. e. Write my goals down and have a friend check it out. Eccl 4:9-10

6. EVALUATE the quality of your goals. a. Do all my goals fit into the context of my written, stated purpose for my life? b. Have I been honest enough to set goals in every area of life, believing God is interested in the total "me": spiritual? recreational? professional? social? educational and intellectual? family relationships? financial? c. Have I developed long-range, short-range, and immediate goals? Have I developed them in that order so that the longrange goal will pre-determine my other goals? d. Can my goals glorify God or are they selfish? e. Did I ask God for his wisdom and guidance before I attempted to establish these goals? f. Would Jesus Christ be willing to be Lord of my life and preside over the reaching these goals? g. If I am thoroughly convinced these are God-given goals, then cannot I expect his power to work in the achievement of these goals? h. Will they pass the three tests (courtesy of T. B. Maston) (1) SECRECY: is it all right if others know my goals? (2) UNIVERSALITY: Goals good for everyone? (3) PRAYER: were my goals born in prayer?

Principles to maintain balance 1. Realize you have a unique contribution to the world. Don’t do what others can do and will do when there are so many things that others cannot do and will not do. 2. Keep time for God, your first and vital necessity. 3. Realize that serving God and His people will cost you something. 4. Learn to say NO and accept criticism for doing so. 5. There will NEVER be a time when you will get it ALL done when you will have enough time to pray as much as you think you should, witness as much, study as much... 6. Don’t postpone 7. Don’t be too concerned about being tired.

If you aim at nothing, you will hit it every time.

Setting Goals. I like this format because it is only one page (I don’t attempt writing a novel). It helps me focus on critical areas of development for the year.
