ABSTRACT: This paper expresses the knowledge based on training programs within the industry.

 

The information gathered and discerned in this paper will explore the training period, introduction of industry and academic experience of the engineering students in industry and will give an insight on effectiveness of training in industry. Training is the activity that is designed to provide learners with the knowledge and skills needed for their jobs. Formal education from academic institutions is basically the proper venue for acquiring appropriate knowledge and skills necessary for future employment. Training is part of the tertiary curriculum which connects the gap between theory and practice as well as between classroom education and real industry life.

REPORTING PERIOD: I join MultiCon Engineers as a Electrician MEP Department on 10 September 2018 for supervised industrial training . This was consist of 6 month or 24 weeks which ends on 09 February 2019. I am continuing my training at Multicon Engineers for 8th semester. Industrial supervisor gives me an opportunity to perform each task for two weeks. Initially , I was given task to perform PVC conduit laying , general wiring works, fixing of back boxes for MultiSocket and gang switches .

FACULTY OF ENGINEERING SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY (FEST)

9

TASKS & ACTIVITIES PERFORMED IN 7TH SEM: 1ST ACTIVITY:

My 1st activity was to lay PVC conduit pipes for light and fan points

 

Installing conduit of different sizes (3/4” , 1” , 1(1/2)” ) of different brands i.e. Jeddah , Adamjee, Prince under or in concrete slabs for concealed fan and light points Fixing it with all related accessories such as Saddle, bend , sockets , elbow etc. It also allows future expansion of the electrical system by pulling additional wires through the conduit. Ridged, nonmetallic PVC conduit is the right material for this job because it is watertight, inexpensive and easy to work with. When installing conduit under a slab it should be buried in the gravel sub-straight about two inches to provide space between the bottom of the concrete and the PVC.

ACADEMIC EXPERIENCE:   

 

Formal education from academic institutions is basically the proper venue for acquiring appropriate knowledge and skills necessary for future employment. Training is part of the tertiary curriculum which connects the gap between theory and practice as well as between classroom education and real industry life. Training has specific goals of improving one's capability, capacity, productivity and performance.

It forms the core of apprenticeships and provides the backbone of content at institutes of technology. It is also important that students are aware of the challenges and proven techniques related to industry.

ACADEMIC SUBJECTS RELATED TO FIELD WORK: In academic session we cover more than 30 subjects. Each one has their own importance but there were some subjects that helped me a lot in field work. In classes we got theoretical concept of machines. In industrial training I see a lot of them practically which clear my theoretical concept. Some of these subjects and their real life experience are as follows:

In 6th semester we cover a course namely “Switchgear and Protection Devices” plays an important role in industrial training. We learnt about switches, fuses and protection relays etc. in this course. We use all of these protection equipment during industrial training.

23

24

In 3rd semester we cover a subject namely “Instrumentation and Measurements” is one of the most important subject of electrical. In this subject we learnt about different electrical instruments and how to use these instruments.

In 4th semester we cover a subject namely “High Voltage Technology” is another important subject of electrical. I pay special attention to this subject for clear the concept of voltage gridding.

In 1st semester we cover a subject namely “English 1”. It helps me a lot in my industrial training like in Presentations, talk with clients and work on sites.

FACULTY OF ENGINEERING SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY (FEST)

25

In 4th semester we cover a subject namely “power Transmission and Distribution” is the most important subject of electrical. I learnt from this subject that how to transmission and distribution is done of electricity.

In 2nd semester we cover a subject namely "Microprocessor Theory". It help me in PLC system because PLC works on microprocessor. It helps a lot in my industrial tanning.

04

05

Cable detector.

Cable detectors can locate cables, circuits, short circuits and ground points. ...Cable detector systems are composed of a signal generator for active lines and a transmitter for cables without current such as a receiver. Cable detectors feed high frequency electro-magnetic signals through the lines being tested.

Screw drivers

Screw drivers is used to lose or tight screws. In vehicle most common screws are Philip screws. Flat screw driver is also used for different purposes.

Tape measure

Level 07

Have a good quality, locking tape measure and a 25’length, 1″ blade is maybe over-kill, but will come in handy for other projects around the home.

A 6″ plastic torpedo level is essential for levelling outlet boxes, cover plates, wall fixtures, etc. A plastic level is less likely to leave marks.

FACULTY OF ENGINEERING SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY (FEST)

PLANS FOR FUTURE: I am looking forward to get recruited by a large contracting company working on different complex projects. So that I get the opportunity to learn more and to get more expertise in power system and to get the necessary

practical experience and confidence.

CONCLUSION:  

 

I have a strong opinion that the industrial training was advantageous for me. In my opinion, industrial training can help in reforming and grooming students in their profession and can produce better engineers. It is suggested that academic institutes should take keen interest in arranging such trainings in industries. So that students will get a better chance to work in a market oriented professional environment compared to their academic institute laboratory.
