DCO10703 Introduction to Media Production Pre-Production Project Overview This is a Pre-Production project which involves the development of an idea and a strategy for a video production. Your outputs should include an Overall Description, a Proposal, a Treatment, and a Script. This project requires you to set up a production team of FOUR students for the work.

Topic and Content of the Video Free choice.

What should be submitted? (1) A cover. (2) An overall description and explanations of your idea. (3) A proposal. (4) A treatment. (5) A script.

The Cover On the first page of the submission, you must show the information below:

The Description and Explanations of Your Idea. (1) Briefly describe what video you are going to produce.  What is the story about (use less than five sentences)  Is it a story driven or character driven screenplay (refer to Notes 09 page 9). Explain your answer. (2) Explain where your idea comes from? (Such as an imaginative thought or a current event in a newspaper (refer to Notes 08 page 4-6 for detail). (3) What is the goal of your video production (refer to Notes 08 page 8 for detail). (4) How will your team search the necessary information about the content of the screenplay (refer to Notes 08 page 9 for detail)

The Proposal Your proposal must include the followings: (refer to Notes 08 page 13 for examples) (1) The title of your screenplay; (2) An opening statement of purpose; (3) A rationale of the need for such a screenplay topic/project; (4) Its structure, organization, and approach (refer to Notes 11 page 1 – 4); (5) Specific information concerning the assessment of anticipated audiences and the means of reaching them (refer to Notes 08 page 10-11 for detail); (6) What resources that your production need. For example, what talents, directors (e.g. lightening director), equipment, location, set up, technical persons, and the likes).

The Treatment The treatment must include: (1) A detailed outline/short story of your video from start to finish. Use less than five sentences to give an overview of the entire story. (2) List and describe all major characters. Each character must contain the Core elements for the character biography (refer to Notes 10 page 7 for detail or click here for examples). (3) Indicate the conflicts and resolutions. (4) Describe how the characters of (2) above fit into the story.

(5) Describe all main events, twists, turns, plot points and climax(s) of the story. (6) List stylistic features. (7) Use a network diagram to show (4) and (5).

The Script Based on the Treatment, you can develop a more detail script of the video, that is, a more complete story. The script should be 4 to ten pages. You need not go down to the dialogue level. For the script, you can use Chinese. After you finished, you must translate it back to English.

Submission Deadline On or before the end of Week 14.
