Many thanks to Krishnan Nambiar for his kind help and encouragement with the Sanskrit translation. His love and dedication in teaching this beautifully rich language is both inspiring and contagious. This Sanskrit Animal Book was originally conceived and created for the Chinmaya TriState Toddler Balavihar Class. Each week the children (with the help of a parent) would make one of the animals during our art segment. Once all the animals were made, we then assembled the pages into a book for the children to read at home. The results were truly spectacular — and each child left for summer break with a book uniquely their own! This is a project children of all ages can enjoy doing.

All of the animal pictures in this book were done with a printmaking technique using a regular household sponge. To recreate the drawings, or make your own, you will need the following:

Materials • Tempera paint (black and white) • Good quality cardstock • Scissors • Black marker • Gold Gel Pen (for accents) • Paintbrush • Paper Plate • Sponge Directions 1. Cut the sponge into a nice sized oval or circle. 2. Mix the black and white tempera paint on the paper plate until you get the shade of gray you want. It’s nice if the paint has some streaks of white or black— it makes the final image more painterly.) 3. Take the sponge and dip it into the gray paint. (Don’t worry if the sponge is not completely covered with paint. Again, it’s nice to have some irregularities in the printing — this will add texture.) 4. Once the sponge print is dry, take a black marker and draw the elements specific to your animal — i.e., ears, tail, mouth, nose, etc. You can use a gold gel pen to highlight different areas of your drawing.
