EVALUATION RESULT OF TRYOUT OF MEDICAL DOCTOR COMPETENCY EXAMINATION (Wiwik Kusumawati, MEU Faculty of Medicine UMY)

Tryout of medical doctor competency examination named as UKDI which was conducted on May 16th 2007 needs to be evaluated in order to give suggestion for improving the actual implementation of the first time competency examination on June 20th 2007. This competency exam has a consequence for those who fail i.e. they will not get certificate of competency which is useful for obtaining medical doctor registration certificate and medical practice licensure. This study was conducted by distributing questionnaires about item content and technical aspect of UKDI using 5-item Lickert scale to 45 respondents participated in the tryout UKDI who originated from faculty of Medicine UMY. Thirty five out of 45 questionnaires were returned. The result revealed that 60% respondents did not know about 7 core competencies of medical doctor, 54% stated that the items already represented the medical doctor competencies, 62% agreed that the questions suitable with the cases that will be faced by practicing physician in the future; however 57% respondent stated that almost all of the questions were specialist cases and 54% had difficulty to answer the questions. Regarding to the technical aspect, 51% respondents stated that the number and the type of questions adequately assessed medical doctor competencies; however, 77% stated that the ample time was not given for doing the question; 71% said that the exam venue should be at the medical faculty of origin; 82% stated that the fee of the tryout exam was expensive and 68% stated that exercise of competency exam conducted in our faculty was beneficial for doing the competency the exam. Based on the evaluation results, the following suggestion are given: 1)information dissemination on core competence of medical doctor and its implementation in medical curriculum needs to be conducted; 2)Item review of the UKDI questions needs to be conducted to be more suitable to the core competence of medical doctor; 3)Consideration of the given time length for answering the questions should be matched with the type and the number of the exam questions; and lastly, 4)The exercise of competence exam conducted in our medical faculty should be continuously organized because it is beneficial for doing the actual exam. COMPETENCE EXAMINATION AND STUDENT ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT : ANY CORRELATION? (Wiwik Kusumawati, MEU Faculty of Medicine UMY)

The objective of medical doctor competency examination named as UKDI is to assess the competency of medical doctor graduates in knowledge domain based on the 7 core competencies of medical doctor established by Director General of Higher Education (DGHE). The aim of this study was to identify whether there was a correlation between the result scores of the tryout of medical doctor competence examination and the graduates’ academic achievement assessed from their grade point average (GPA). The scores of 55 participants of the tryout UKDI conducted on May 2006 who were originated from faculty of medicine UMY were analyzed whether there was any correlation with their GPA. The study results revealed that there was a moderate correlation between scores of tryout exam with medical doctor graduates’ GPA (r 0,59); a moderate correlation between the tryout exam scores with the graduates’ GPA during clerkship (r 0,45) and a strong correlation between the tryout exam scores with the graduates’ GPA during under graduate medical education (r 0,62). of graduates. These result indicated the medical students’ academic achievement had a correlation with the scores of the tryout of medical doctor competence examination. Therefore, the implementation of competence-based curriculum should be more optimized on the process as well as on the assessment. We suggest that medical doctor competency examination should assess knowledge, skills and attitude domain comprehensively. In the implementation of the competence- based curriculum, evaluation of competency achievement tends to be formative assessment.
