Castaneda...Blooming Genius The gorgeous orchid corsages at the Hospital's Employee Se rv ice Award Dinner came not from some South American jungle, but from the carefully tended plants grown locally by Alphonse Castaneda, the instrument technician in the Surgery Department. Alphonse has been growing orchids for seven years. Bloomed from a hobby into a pan-time vocation, his orchids are in great demand by local flower mans for retailing to the public. Orchid, delicate beauty belies their Jurability. They make great gifts - a cut stem

laden with flowers, called a spray, can last for one to two months, Alphonse says. He grows his plants by cloning them in petri dishes, or combines varieties through hybridisation. The work is exacting, as is his delicate adjustments of the sophisticated surgical equipment. "My job here is to make sure everything used in an operation is working properly." says Alphonse. "It requires great care and the ability to troubleshoot during a procedure if something isn't working as well as it should. Alphonse's expertise goes beyond mere

maintenance. He redesi gned a surgic l w a r.'al used (or cwting bone blocks for ve rtebra fusions. "The improvement makes the procedure go a lot (aster. - Alphonse says with justifiable pride. Alphonse was a prime mover in organ,. ing the Hospital softball teams, although his schedule doesn't permit him to play this year. "The teams boost morale by helping people from different departments get to know each other as people," he sayx, "not just as functions." This is very important to Alphonse, who, as anyone who knows him will a(li nn, is a real 'people person; with a well deserved reputation for kindness and generosity. ..... ''.
